It could be a shift fork issue, do you have 5th gear? If so, most likely is something in reverse gear, or idler gear. At this point, you will be looking at removing, and disassembling the transmission to find the problem.

sounds like its an internal tranny problem. something like possibly broken/cracked shift fork. it will have to pulled and inspected.

You will need to remove the shifter tower (four or five bolts hod it in the transmission.) and look at the parts for wear.

5 speed trans 96 tacoma jumping out of gear 1st through 4th gears when you let off the gas

Hi there,

This commonly occurs when either the Shift Linkage is faulty (or simiply needs adjustment), Shifter Fork is loose, or there is excessive movement of the Input Shaft.

Adjusting the shift linkage would be your first task. If this doesn't correct the problem, then you will need to investigate the other 2 components as suggested above.

Cheers,

Toyota Tacoma 1995. Manual transmission will not shift. The shifting lever will not engage with brake pedal pushed. Cannot get the vehicle in neutral, reverse, etc. Also brakelights do not light up while...

the transmission might be rusted on the inside. this happened with my saturn SC2. i just bought a new transmission at a junkyard to fix the issue. there might not be a way to fix the transmission. sorry

1995 jeep cherokee standard transmission will not go into reverse

If you can select another gear with no grinding and clutch feels normal likely either the reverse synchro is worn out or an internal shift fork is worn...either way, trans needs to come out and be opened up to check. Can you put it into reverse with the engine off?

Shifting problems

start with the clutch fluid, is it full? check the clutch cable from the pedal to the transmission, does it have a lot of play in it, is it adjustable? check the bushings on the shifter base, does the shifter itself have a lot of play in it? i'd start with those, if all those are ok then it might be the clutch itself. when a clutch gets worn down it doesn't release fully causing a hard shift or grinding when going into gear. put the truck on a flat surface so it doesn't free roll at all, with the engine off, put the truck in first or reverse, press the clutch pedal fully to the floor and start the engine. let off the brake. if the truck moves at all it means your clutch cable is out of adjustment or its just getting worn out. provifing the shifter and the fluid level is good.

Transmission wont go into reverse

The transmission will need to come out and be torn down. The reverse shift fork is probably broken.
