Question about 2000 Volvo S80
Engine check light came on emissions but the car is running fine.
That's because your emissions system wearing down or failing doesn't effect the car it just means your car is causing more pollution than normal

SOURCE: Check Engine Light Stays On
Go to a parts store, most will scan for engine codes stored in the cars computer for free. They can tell u what codes are present (write them down for future reference) what they mean, and what could be the problem. It is an indication that there is an emissions problem, and even though the car runs fine, ignoring the warning light could result in more problems and $ down the road if not corrected soon. When u get this free info, u can decide if u want to fix it yourself, go to a private mechanic/garage, or go to the dealer. It's always a good idea to go w/ knowledge of the problem and possible fix to avoid being taken advantage of. Good luck!

I had the same problem with my G35 05 after i forgot to close the cap, Usually the car will run for about 100 miles or so before the light goes away, but you can also, reset the ECU by checking this site http://www.6mt.net/forum/performance-mods/2833-easy-ecu-reset-procedures.html
Or what i did was pulling the fuses marked "Eng cont/inj, there is a 15A under the hood, in the fusebox near the battery, and a 10A in the driver-side interior fusebox - pull both. (As someone suggested in the same thread)it worked.

Agreed with thundergod - I had a failed cam sensor on my Audi A4 that made no discernable difference in the car's operation, but changing it and resetting the light fixed the problem.

Hooking a code reader onto the OBD II port will give you a code so that you can figure out what is wrong with it. It is most likely an emission code which won't hurt the performance but possibly the gas mileage

The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.
When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon or small picture of an engine) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible system faults (the gas cap is just one of them) that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen/Oriley and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.
