Hello. Chances are this 12 year old cable is corroded. You can sometimes free them up using a product available at auto parts stores called WD-40. Spray it the length of the cable and let it sit overnight to do its magic. If after doing that two or three times, you have no success then replacing the parking brake cable would be in store. Regards, J.

My husband replaced the brake booster on my 97 Merc Mountaineer and now it won't shift out of park after brake pedal reassembly. What did he miss?

my guess is he moved or broke a clip going to the steering column or moved something and forgot to put it back on. needs to look for the cable going to the shifter from the brake pedal arm. i think that has another cable at the top of the arm. he may have forgot to connect that. its been awhile since i worked on those but most cars and trucks are built about the same. have to check for lose cable or a lug that does not have something on it. it worked before it will work again when he figures it out. good luck

Shifter on 95 buick riviera stuck in park

There is a "park lock cable" located in the steering column that releases the shifter after the ignition switch is turned to the on position. There is also a BTSI (brake trans shift interlock) solenoid that also releases the shifter when you press on the brake pedal. One of them is not functioning, are you able to turn the steering wheel after the car is started?

Parking brake is stuck

Not sure exactly about this model but... In most cars the parking brake is applied by a cable system much like brake cables on a bicycle. Over time, these cables rust. You may be able to soak it down with WD-40 or some other penetrating lubricant. If that doesnt work you need to replace it. In the mean time to get the parking brake to free you can just cut the cable close to the wheel with a heavy side cutter or bolt cutter. Doing this has no effect on your regular brakes.
