Either gear selector is not in park, or the gear lever itself is loose or out of alignment, and the park sensor is not working. If transmission lever is not in park, you cant pull the key out. On most cars, the key will return as far as the I position, shutting off the engine, but not allowing key extraction.

I know this is an old question but, if the problem ever comes up again the best solution is to replace your ignition cylinder. The pins in cylinder will stick not allowing key to turn. The cylinder cost around twenty dollars and pretty easy to fix.

Just changed ignition lock cylinder and my 1999 toyota 4runner limited wont start

wont start, or wont crank>????????

did you follow all the steps in the FSM for this?
and heed the warnings?
did you shut down the AIR bags first. (battery pull and the 90 second rule) and keep battery pulled whole time?
air bags can kill, and ign. key fiddling is #1 here.
i bet you did not pull the battery as the FSM directs and you blew the fuses. or worse.
do you have the IMMO , immoblizer option, is the IMMO dash lamp
telling you, its ACTIVE, that is, IMMOBILized? bingo
the IMMO lamp tells you , im ok, at key on, and then tells you Im off or on. the operators guide covers this lamp, lost your guide?

the IMMO cuts fuel , not cranking in most cars.
Does the CEL glow key on, if not the ECU is dead, blown fuse #1 reason.

My 2000 bravada oldsmobile wont start is it the sartaer

It depends upon what actually happens when you turn the key. If the engine turns over, but doesn't start, it is NOT the starter. If all you hear is a clicking sound, or the starter motor engages but doesn't have the power to turn it over, then it could be wither the starter or the battery. A quick and easy check when this happens is to turn on the interior light. If, when you turn the key and get the click or no activity, the interior light dims way down or goes completely out, it is probably the battery. If you turn the key and get nothing at all, things are more difficult. The interior lamp test should be performed. If the light goes out immediately, try the battery. If the light doesn't flicker or dim at all, then the problem could be the starter, the starter relay, the Park/Neutral Position (PNO) switch, the ignition switch, or the IGN E (Fuse 22) or IGN A (Fuse 34) fuse in the fuse block under the hood.

My hhr will not turn off, where is the battery so i can disconnect it

Unplugging the battery won't shut it down I don't think.

Get into your fuse box under the dash or in the engine compartment and pull the fuse for the fuel pump.

I have an 04 expedition . dattery drains after sitting overnight. replaced alternator and battery. hooked up amp meter and pulled fuses but nothing seemed to drop amperage down. what else do i try???

If you disconnect the positive terminal from the battery and do a continuity test between that cable and the Negative cable you are going to find continuity. You have a grounded Positive cable or wire somewhere. either the insulation has worn through or a wire has been damaged. If you have added an Alarm or Stereo amplifier check those first as they are the likely candidates.

My car won't shut off

I would suspect your ignition switch is bad. Try turn the key all the way back to the accessory position. If the vehicle will not shut off then open the hood and open the fuse box cover. Find the IGN C (20Amp) fuse and pull it out. This will cut the fuel and ignition to the engine. Do not replace the fuse until you want to start the vehicle or you will drain the battery. Have your ignition switch checked and replace.

check your fuses under the hood. There is a fuse labeled IGN if that doesn't work just go threw all your fuses and make sure they all work sometimes when they plug the tester in it can short out fuses. let me know how it goes
