Question about 2001 Volvo S40

Car stopped going, but engine didn't

We were driving, and there was a whirring sound like a top, then a clunk, then the gas pedal ceased to make the car go! Is there any way this is something simple?

    Thanks Mike,
Is that something that can be replaced by my regular mechanic, or do I need a transmission specialist?

Engine starts and runs fine. Lo, 2nd and drive do engage - whirring noise when first starts up - no reverse at all and no gear engagement or clunking in reverse.

Start by checking the fluid condition and level.Too little or too much fluid can cause problems like this.Sounds like the reverse servo is going bad to me. the whirring sound could also be the torque converter. i don't specialize in transmissions but have diagnosed quite a few.
Hope this helps you some,

My 2000 Explorer makes a whirring sound when you accelerate - can this noise be due to a bent tierod? The previous owner had an accident involving the front end and was told that the tierod was haywire?

Typcially tie rods will only make a clunking noise or a squeak. The whirring sound if would suspect to be a wheel bearing. When you drive, slowly turn from left to right, if the pitch changes than its the bearing.

In 2 wheel drive there is a whirring sound from the front end followed by a loud clunk where it feels as though you have run over a large rock or chunk of ice. Does not seem to occur in 4wd

if the whirring you describe sounds like an airplane and increases with speed that would be a wheelbearing and it may be loose to cause the clunk noise. when it is put in 4 wheel drive that can load the bearing up and noise goes away.

I have the same problem in 95 intrepid

does it clunk when you accelerate only ? if so you need new engine mounts. To make sure, open your hood and observe the engine movement when pressing the gas pedal while in drive(other foot on the brake of course )

Trans clunking when slowing down

Sounds like youi may have a few serious problems going on to have that kind of back lash occuring at higher speeds. I have experiance with low spped clunks on Bronkos and your type of vech being a car dealer. One you might try for low speed clunk on take off and braking at stop likts just completeing a stop? Pull the drive shaft and lubricate the splin - two check your leaf springs for weakness and wore bushings - take a look at your shocks - three u bolts holding springs to rear axle housing may be letting the axle housing actually dip or tweak or all those thing in combination - now you may have some serious slop in the pig - transfer case may be causing that clunk - as far as high spped clunk and activity you have a serous problem and you just might drop the transferr case have an accident fliping over..............Mike South Bend Indiana don't just keep driving and making problem worst...........
