Question about 2006 Chrysler Town & Country

Intermittant no start, engine cranks..not a low voltage or battery condition. Occurs about once,maybe twice a week..

Probably a camshaft position sensor. if you do replace it get one from the chrysler dealer as aftermarket cam sensors are prone to failure

I'd use a gage and check proper fuel pressure, 3.1L vinT, 40.5--47 psi.
Also, engine cranking the vehicle systems get battery voltage. engine running, the systems get alternator voltage, that can be several volt difference.
Maybe a voltage drop on the fuel system?

Verify that BOTH your positive battery cable AND your negative battery cable have good clean connections at both ends. Make sure that the part where the negative battery cable bolts too on the body of the car is free of rust and a good solid connection. After confirming good connections, then verify that the alternator is charging at between 13.5 and 14 volts when the engine rpm is raised to near 2000 rpm. Check that the battery voltage stays above 10 volts when the starter is cranking and turning the engine over. Once all these things are met, then the system is in good condition. If the battery voltage is too low after a sufficient amount of recharge time, then the battery is probably bad. If the Alternator voltage is too low once you verify a good battery, then the alternator is probably bad.

I can only give you two possible if's
1. a faulty(intermittent ckp)crank position sensor.
2. intermittent injector signals
seemingly to me the first would be the most suspect as the injectors are timed from the crank position as so is the spark.
you may have a wire crushed/frayed/broken somewhere in the loom.
or possibly a crank position sensor could be dirty,covered with small metal particles,cracked making for those odd starts.
sorry i can't help you much further, but this is one of those things where being plugged into the computer at the moment of issue occurs.I would suggest taking it to a dealer where they can hook up a vdr(video data recorder) to your vehicle, and when the problem occurs will capture the fault when it happens.
And from your description this would be a best solution for you to keep from damaging your engine if any is occurring. this would absolutely be the fastest and least amount of money out of pocket option instead of going back to the shop every time it occurs..

There are only two problems with electrical circuits. Too much amperage or too little amperage.We have to determine what you have.
An excellent test is to put your test meter red lead on the positive battery post and the black lead on the negative battery post. Crank the engine and record the voltage. Then place the red meter lead on the starter's battery terminal and the black lead on the negative battery post. Again crank the engine and record the voltage. The two voltages should be with in one half volt of each other. If the voltage difference is greater that one half volt, there is a resistance in the circuit, somewhere. I would expect the voltage to drop a volt or two, max
If the voltage dosent drop, there is high resistance resulting in low amperage. If the voltage drops too low then there is low resistance resulting in high amperage.
High resistance=dirty terminals
Low resistance = shorted wire, slow turning cranking motor maybe caused by bad starter, bad battery or hard to turn engine. ( engine bad, alternator or power steering pump bad, a/c pump bad, etc)
Can use head light for test. Turn on lights and note the brightness. Crank engine. If while cranking, the lights stay bright= high resistance.
If lights go dim = low resistance.

what is the condition of the battery cables you are probably onto something about a ground but i dont think your ground issue is going to be at the batteries you may not have a good ground on the alternator. The next thing I would check is ... the alternator itself do you know that you are getting between 13.6 and 14.2 volts out of the alternator, a under charge or a overcharge condition both are bad for batteries.

I would check alternator output first if it is not within the above range you need to replace it

If the alternator is putting out in the range of 13.6 to 14.2 then you need to look elsewhere... you may have something draing the batteries overtime interior lights, electric brake controller for trailor brakes if equipped sound system if anything is getting power without going through a switched circuit this could also be your cause.

Cold starting problem


How old is your Battery? at the Temp. Stated above an Older Battery even though Good may not have Enough Cold Cranking Amps Left to Kick her Over.

Hard to start


You have all the symptoms of a low voltage condition in the battery, Kragen and other parts stores like it will test your battery and charging system (alternator) for free, but it is pretty safe to say the battery is toast. Don't reject this solution without the test being done, I think you will find I am right, low battery voltage can cause trouble codes to be set and low fuel pressure to name a few..

Vechile turns off while driving


Does it happen to occur when you maybe hit a bump? It sounds so much like a previous car I worked on he hs so many keys on the ring that when he hit a bump the weight of all the keys pulled on the switch and shut it off the only other way to find this is start the truck and start to shake wiring harnesses under the dash and under the hood it sounds like a loose connection in the primary ignition circuit
