86 2.8L pontiac firebird - c9c6719.gifRefer to this diagram for instructions, ok the distributor rotor should be pointed to the bottom just right of center when the line on the crankshaft harmonic balancer is at "0" mark on the indicator tab on the compression stroke, number 1 cylinder is the 1st one on te left as you face the engine from up front, pull that spark plug out, rotate the engine until u feel pressure with your finger in the #1 spark plug hole, stop at that point and locate the line on the crankshaft harmonic balancer, slowly rotate the engine around until the mark on the balancer lines up with the idicator "0" mark is lined up, you know should have the distributor rotor pointed at the # 1 cap terminal which as i said is the bottom left of distributor cap, bottom being the engine side of the cap. If you still don't get it call me at 925-459-0571

How do i replace the distributor in a 91 firebird with 3.1 v6

Best practice is to remove #1 spark plug, roll engine over by hand until #1 piston at top dead center on compression stroke. Remove dist cap , find a surface outside of dist to mark direction rotor is pointing then mark dist body position. Remove dist ,you will notice as you lift dist, rotor will spin backward keep an eye on it, when the rotor stops spinning as you lift, that will be your dropin position for new distributor. That will get you close, enough to start car but you will need a timing light to set exact timing

I have a 1989 pontiac firebird v6 and i took the distributor cap annd rotor off and replaced them and now the car wont start it turns over. the car nnever had problems starting before this?

it sounds like that you have the spark plug wires on wrong, get a auto manual, and look up your engine, and the firing order, and go from there to re install the wires 1 at a time. the rotor sounds like it is ok.

Hood pins on a 1991 Pontiac Firebird

Find the point on the radiator support where the pins will be located.Be sure there isn't anything underneath to drill through.Measure from the fender to the center point of the hole location, and measure from the front fascia(edge where the front edge of the hood meets the body)to the center point of the hole location.Use these measurements to mark the hole on the hood.Repeat for the other side.MEASURE TWICE DRILL ONCE.

Crankshaft Position Sensor

The crank sensor is on the front of your engine behind the harmonic balancer. You will need a balancer puller for a 3.8 and a crank sensor alignment tool to do this lob.

Timing chain setting for 89 Firebird

Yes, there are two timing marks, one on the crank gear, and one on the cam gear. The crank gear mark needs to be at the top, and the cam gear mark needs to be at the bottom (lined up w. one another).

1992 Firebird not starting

If it is backfiring the firing order is not correct. turn the crank until the timing mark lines up to zero on the timing cover. Remove the distributor cap, and see where the rotor button is pointed. It should be pointed at number 1. (at this point you have a 50/50 chance) The cam turns half the speed of the crank shaft, this means that even through cylinder number one is at top dead center, it might be on the exhaust stroke instead of compression stroke. If this is the case, you will need to turn the crank shaft one full revolution, and try again.

Reinstall the distributor cap with plug wire number one being placed where the rotor button is pointed. Install the rest of the plug wires in order.
