I own a 94 ford ranger with an overdrive auto trans. recently i have experienced the vehicle not going into gear. atleast at first, then it will then it wont then it will. might this be an electrical problem? literally i can go from park to L1 and it be like i never moved the lever. as vehicle warms up, i can catch a gear but then it will again be like its in neutral.

Check the transmission fluid after it's warmed up,if it's down then top it up and repair the leak or your going to need a transmission soon.

Have you checked the condition and level of the trans fluid? Is it full? have a foul odor? or discolored? Make sure the level is correct, and if it is, you most likely have some type of internal transmission failure, again fluid condition will tell you alot.

This maybe an electrical issue, have the electronic control module of the trans tested for fualt codes by the dealer.

Overdrive is designed for highway use, to lower the engine's rpm's and conserve fuel. It will not hurt your vehicle to drive it in drive in the city.

The trans gearing is all the same, the rear end gear set is where final drive ratio is determined

1992 A4LD trans problems.

Sounds like the shift kit is warn out in the transmission. The overdrive line may not be able to provide enough hydrolic pressure to engage the gears to move the truck. When you switch to regualr drive, that line is able to build the hydrolic pressure to engage the gears. At a certian speed (for the transmission, certian hydrolic pressure) there is enough pressure to engage the gears in overdrive, but go below that, and you have to start in drive again. If this is the case, there is no easy fix for that and I recomend taking it to a transmission shop to have your shift kit examined. Opening up an automatic transmission requires specalized tools, clean shop enviroment, and knowlage more then the average back yard machanic has.
