Question about 1997 Dodge Intrepid

After starting when car engine gets to operating tempature it boils coolant back into reservoir. It is a 3.0 6 cylinder engine

Check cooling fans are working,if they are it is probably a head gasket

I drive a Camry V6 3.0L Every time I top up the coolant to the recommended level and after driving the contents in the reservoir boil over and spill out.


There may be a slight head gasket leak to the coolant jacket, not large enough to overheat the engine. It is normal for some coolant to escape at operating temp, but not lots, and it should cool down to about the recommended level again.

Something is pressurising the coolant jacket. Have it tested for the presence of combustion gasses in the coolant. This is a simple test.

Another thing, that model often develops a crack in the radiator plastic top tank. It is not the problem here, but worth knowing.

Hi Odnanref, If the coolant is boiling you have a problem with the cooling system. If you cannot see a leakage have the thermostat in the engine checked and replaced and hope that you have not overheated the engine to the extent of needing a cylinder head reconditioning job carried out. The AC is effected because the condenser is mounted in front of the radiator and depends on cooling from the fan. If the engine overheats the AC will be unable to cool. Regards John

First check your oil to make sure it is still clean. You also need to have your coolant system pressure tested. Sounds like you have a cracked block.

hi.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you may have a blown head gasket.

the coolant is probably not boiling in the reservoir, but if the head gasket has blown by a cylinder, some of the gas is escaping form the cylinder and bubbling up through the coolant.

a pressure check on the cooling system will confirm this, but you could also check the exhaust gas.
if it is white in colour, or has a sweet sugary smell, then this will mean that coolant is also being burnt in the cylinder.

My engine is overheating, and when i lift the hood it appears that the coolant in my coolant reservoir is boiling/bubbling....there doesnt seem to be a leak except from the reservoir itself, the reservoir...


With the engine cool open radiator cap. If the level is low you are losing coolant. Go for a 30/40 dollars, radiator compression test. Might be a bad radiator cap seal, water pump leak cylinder head gasket.
If the coolant level is in top, then there are many other reason.

I dont think the coolant is boiling, I think you have an air bubble in your system wich is causing a air lock and youll need it flushed out. Your reservior cap should be tight always.. never loose this is an air tight system and your allowing it to get air in it. I have a 2002 linc ls and just had to pay 1000.00 to replace the system because I let an air lock go for too long and had so much back pressure I blew up my reservior.

Overheating when driving no mixing of the coolant and oil


The three most likely thing's cause overheating are faulty thermostat,electric fan or clogged radiator. Only at has been overheat so much it boils dry that it will cause engine trouble. Most common problem's are blown cylinder head gasket or a cracked cylinder head.
mixing coolant and water depends on where the gasket has blown or head is cracked. You will first need to check if it actually is overheating. The reason is. If the head is cracked or gasket blown then you can get a false boiling which is compresion from the cylinders blows through the crack in the head or gasket causing the coolant to blow out of the radiator cap.Fill the radiator to the top leave the cap off then start the engine.If the water blows out then you will need to remove the cylinder head check the gasket is ok. If its damaged replace if not get the head checked for crack's. If no water blow's when you start it check the thermostat is working properly. To check the thermostat put it a in a saucepan cover it with water bring the water to the boil. It should open before the water boil's but near boiling-point. If its ok then start the engine again leave it running until it boils and check the fan is running. If that's ok then its radiator problem. Their is no way to check if the radiator is ok you will need to get a new one. One last point. If the cylinder head or gasket are faulty it was caused by overheating so by just fixing the cylinder head problem is not a cure it will overheat again. Check the three things I mentioned at the begining and told you how to check them. Hope this help's. Cheer's

Radiator coolant or reservoir tank always full


Relax, there is no problem.

When the water / coolant gets hot (inside of radiator/engine) it starts to boil, ofcourse when it boils, it expands, so the fluid in the radiator has to go somewhere, thats why there is the overflow reservoir. So, when the fluid boils, some moves to the reservoir to avoid any potential problems with the radiator, such as it blowing up, or not being able to cool off all of the fluid running through the engine.

But relax, its normal.

Overheating,reserve coolant tank boiling I have a 2000 Ford Taurus with the similar problem. I had my water pump replaced then this started.

To solve the problem you have the things to do in this order;

) When the engine is cold top off the radiator with fluid. (When the pump was replaced the fluid should have been also)
) Make sure the radiator fluid has anti-freeze in it. This is also anti boil also !
) Add fluid to the overflow reservoir.
) Make sure the drive belt was replaced on the water pump.
) With the engine running, you can add fluid to the radiator for the first minute or so. You want to get air pockets out.
) Replace radiator cap.
) Let car warm up. When it's hot you should get the radiator fan coming on.
) When it get hotter the air-conditioning fan may come on.
) If the fan does not come on, the heat sensor is probably bad.
) If all fans come on, and it overheats, you may have a bad thermostat. Trace the upper radiator hose to where it connects to the engine. That's where it located.

Do not operate the engine when it overheats, You will damage the head gaskets and cause radiator fluid to leak into the cylinders.
If you smell radiator fluid in the exhaust fumes, it may already be leaking.
