Question about 2003 Saab 9-3

6 Answers

I have a Saab 9-3 2.2 tid which I bought a week ago. The engine management light came on after the first day of driving causing the car to go in to limp mode. The garage replaced the airflow unit and the exhaust egr valve. The car seems fine now but the fuel consumption is really poor since these parts were replaced. between 35 and 38 mpg. I have also noticed a lot of smoke when I slow down on the motorway and then accellerate again. Can you offer a suggestion as what this might be?

I am not a mechanic but i have got the same model saab which i have had for 5 years. Same issue a couple of years ago, for me it turned out to be a hole in the hose to the intercooler. Loss of power and smoking. Once repaired all ok though

I had this problem with my 9-3 2.2 tid 2003 model. Fixed with a new intercooler and egr valve. Bought intercooler off ebay for 115.00 GBP. Intercooler a common part to go I believe.

I have had and still the same problem with my 2002 9-3 2.2 TID for the past 6 months. I have spent £420 at saab dealership and still not resolved the problem. the intercooler pipe was blowing off creating smoke out the back and have since had the intercooler hoses replaced. Put it on a computer today and I have problem with the boost pressure sensor which requires cleaned/replaced. When the engine is rev-ved, the turbo waste gate should open on increase in pressure but is not, thus illuminating the engine management light. I have looked on e-bay and the part is less than £10. I hope this helps. It cost £40 to diagnose problem so fingers crossed.

Hiya i dont have a solution but i have got the same problem with mine. fuel consumption is like a ferrai putting upto £200 every 10days in fuel. i have spent just under £1000 on various different parts air mass meter, turbo waste gate part, fuel air filters, also a service oir change with a engine flush treatment. none of these have solved the problem and like i said fuel consumption is getting worse and i get a load of black smoke come from the back when i put my foot down even just a bit.

I have a 2003 SAAB 9-3 2.0 Linear and just filled it up with gas and the gas gauge now reads empty and the engine light came on. I just got the car a week ago.

You may need a new fuel sender (sensor) is why car isn't reading your gas, and with the engine light now on that is cause your gas cap wasn't put on tight enough. I've had both of these happen to me with my car. Hope this helps.

2004 Saab 9-3 Aero. replaced fuel pump aprox four month ago ( @ Aprox 100,000 miles), the last two fuel fills I have smelt gasoline in and around car (no visable leaks). Check engine light came on 1 week...

While a fuel filter won't normally cause the check engine light, it could cause other errors that would trigger the error light to come on.

Since fuel filters are easy to change and not very expensive, I would change it and see would happens. But you might also want to run a pressure test on your fuel pump also.

SAAB 9-5 LINEAR TID DIESEL SALOON 3.0 DIESEL THE FOLLOWING DEFECT: THE CAR STARTS, RUNS AND DRIVES SWEETLY,THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE NEVER GOES ABOVE THE HALFWAY MARK AND THE HEATER BLOWS CONSTANT HOT AIR....

I had the same problem on my 9-5 vector 3.0 TiD with the top up coolant warning. Nearly became bankrupt trying to diagnose the problem and trips to Saab. Header tank, sensors, pressure tested etc. The Saab squaddies couldn't figure it out until it got worse. It's a head gasket failure despite passing pressure tests initially...sounds like it's still early days on yours. Had to replace the engine for near £5000.but under warranty :-) Reckon 2.5-3k at a good specialists.

2005 saab 93 tid sport very bad brake squeal after pads and disks replaced 6 weeks ago

You can try using anti squeal on the pads. This works in some cases.Another area to check is the rotors for truness. Also all brake hardware and make sure the caliper moves freely on it's slides. Squeal is caused by the pads vibrating. Hope this helps solve your problem.
