Question about 1986 Buick Regal

I have a 350 small block chevy engine, just changed cam to 480 lift, timing is right on but car will nit idle below 1400 rpms. When i try to idle it down it shuts off any ideas?

Because of the high lift, 0.480, you may find that it won't idle any lower than that. When you increase the cam size you decrease the amount of time that the valves are closed, this means that it takes more rpms to keep the engine running because of the reduced compression and power stroke durations. This is the same reason why they put a high stall converter in the transmission, it's used to compensate for increased idle rates in cars with bigger cams.

Loosing vacuum to the vacuum advance, maybe? It really should be on a vacuum that is only present upon acceleration only, not full time vacuum

You will have to advance the timing,if this is so,and put the vacuum on throttle sense vacuum, and not full time vacuum,if it is full time vacuum, when you accelerate,it will ****** the timing,if the vacuum is on a vacuum port with vaccuum only on acceleration, then it will advance the distributor, and only then.

Can you put stocked 350 cam in 1978 gm 305 engine without changing any other parts ?

Anytime you change the cam shaft you must change the lifters as well. But if you are asking if it is a direct replacement part, the answer is yes. A small block chevy is a small block chevy. A 283 cam will fit in a 400 block or any other block in between.

Sounds like the fuel pump is going bad(or in this case, has gone bad). I suggest that you change the fuel pump and use a fuel cleaner in your gas tank as dirty gas may have caused the problem to begin with.

I recently changed the sparks plugs on my 2007 Nissan Versa and now I am getting random idle problems while my car is in park. The car will idle from 1400 rpms them all of a sudden jump up to 2100 rpms and...

If your check engine light is on have it scanned for fault codes. Also check to make sure you don't have a vacuum leak, you could of pulled a hose loose accidently when you changed your plugs.
Signals from the oxygen sensor, and/or a bad throttle position will also cause engine surge.
Good luck, i hope this helps.

Hi I have have a small block chevy with a good size cam headers Holly . The engine makes great horse power at all rpms. But it stubles from a dead stop . Do i need to advance the timing. ?

Either timing or it needs a bigger shot of fuel when you step on it. Bigger accelerator pump shot might help. Is the carb jetted correctly for your application?

I'm trying to find out the horse power of my chevy small block engine 1 GM 14010207

Look at the vin # from outside the car through the windshield on the bottom of the drivers side. The 8th digit in the vin # is the engine code. You should be able to look it up on the internet. I want to say 175hp but i'm not certain. It is usually a letter. For example a small block 350 for certain years is the letter M and I believe small block 305 is P.

On the chevy small block v8 the numbers will be on the left side of the engine look for a small step right at the head / block mating area. The numbers will be in the form of a ser# get that number and call a good chevy dealer and they can tell what engine you got. But any small block chevy crate engine will be a 350 or a 305. they will act the same as far as tune up and any vacuum hoses to the carb or trans. They interchange of a sort.

What engine of other cars could fit in Chevy caprice 82-85,

almost every rear drive drive full size used the 305 V8, so u can get an engine from a Buick La sabre, Pontiac bonneville and firebird, also Oldsmobile 88, and don't forget Camaro. any 305 chevy V8 will bolt in, also the 350 V8 will bolt in, this is a much better choice..

Settong the timing on a 350 small block.

On that set up the computer mainly sets your timing. It reads the timing off of the crank sensor, cam sensor, it tells the injectors and coil packs what to do.

Aftermarket intake, camshaft and either a good set of heads or port/polish what you have. If you go with a cam, go with more adv. duration and duration and .050. I like running a .525 lift, .230 dur. @ .050 and .292 advertised duration. Get a good set of springs and valves. This cam should get your redline around 6200. If you're using this engine on the street, I prefer the Performer RPM with a 1" spacer. This provides plenty of velocity to the heads. If you can find a set of camel hump heads, casting number 041 you'll love those or have your heads ported. I'd run a Edlebrock 1407 carb. with this set up if you're using it on the street. If you're using this engine for strip duty as well, use a single plane intake like a Victor Jr. Professional Products have a nice selection of single plane intakes for a very low price. I've bought one myself and really liked it.
