Common Audi problem.....check to make sure the ant is connected to the back of the radio...if it is the radio has died, and needs replaced.

The radio emitts static on the AM stations when I step on the brake pedal, but does not emitt static when on the FM stations.

This can happen for three reasons:

Do you have tinted windows? The AM radio signal travels further than FM due to being a lower frequency; however, its transmissioncan can easily be interfered. Tinted windows affect the AM signal's transmission to your car and not FM which is at a much faster frequency. Once I tinted my windows, the AM interference went way up when I accelerated and braked. I only listen to my FM channels now due to this annoying interference.

You may have electrical interference in your car causing this as well. Does it happen when rolling down the windows as well?

Third, it could be distance, the AM's transmission tower can be far away and you might be barely in range whereas the FM's transmission tower may be closer.

I get FM reception but no AM on my '05 Jetta factory radio..help?

it might be that your gadget posses a wrong panel written AM when there is no am tuner. If you can check inside it whether it has a choke wound with copper wire for AM reception. If its missing, its aint gonna have any reception
