Question about 2001 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

Timing belt was very loose so i changed the timing belt tensioner pulley.I tried to make sure and not move the timing belts position on the cam and crank but now im not sure if it may have moved.I located the crank tdc mark but i don't know if the cam tdc mark faces up or down.And once i get these marks lined up how do i get the belt back on without moving the gears. The engine is shutting down almost immediately after start so I want to make sure timings not the problem.

    need more info but you have to lock that motor in two places when u change the belt one holds the injection pump, the other holds the back of the camshaft the marks are on the crank and cam pulley

  14. Install the timing belt.
  15. Position the timing belt to ensure that the tension side of the belt is taut and move the timing belt tension adjusting lever clockwise until the tensioner pointer is flowing.
  16. If installing a used timing belt (used over 60 min. from new), the pointer should be positioned approximately 0.16 in. (4mm) to the left of the "V" notch when viewed from the front of the engine.
  17. If installing a new timing belt, the pointer should be positioned at the center of the "V" notch when viewed from the front of the engine.
  18. Torque the timing belt tensioner adjusting bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  19. Install the timing belt front cover and torque the bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  20. Install the engine harness connectors.
  21. Install the crankshaft pulley and toque the pulley-to-crankshaft bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  22. Move the drive belt tensioner to the loose side and install the drive belt to its normal position.
  23. Connect the negative battery cable

one guy found engine with no interference at all, later found all 12 bent over. and useless, but sure dont hit. now.... LOL...
just a warning, about DOHC engines, "respect them"
i build it back (was dead before) and then do a by hand cylinder leak down test, and if that fails, the head comes
off, i never crank a suspect engine (or dead), until i do that.

  1. Remove the timing belt covers using procedures described earlier in this section.
  2. If not done as part of the cover removal, rotate the crankshaft clockwise to the TDC/compression position for No. 1 cylinder.
  3. Loosen the timing belt idler pulley to relieve the tension on the belt, move the pulley away from the belt and temporarily tighten the bolt to hold it in the loose position.
  4. Make matchmarks on the belt and both pulleys showing the exact placement of the belt. Mark an arrow on the belt showing its direction of rotation.
  5. Carefully slip the timing belt off the pulleys.
  6. dont move cam, with belt off it warns.
  7. Remove the idler pulley bolt, pulley and return spring.
  8. Use an adjustable wrench mounted on the flats of the camshaft to hold the cam from moving. Loosen the center bolt in the camshaft timing pulley and remove the pulley.
  9. Check the timing belt carefully for any signs of cracking or deterioration. Pay particular attention to the area where each tooth or cog attaches to the backing of the belt. If the belt shows signs of damage, check the contact faces of the pulleys for possible burrs or scratches.
  10. Check the idler pulley by holding it in your hand and spinning it. It should rotate freely and quietly. Any sign of grinding or abnormal noise indicates replacement of the pulley.
  11. Check the free length of the tension spring. Correct length is 38.5mm measured at the inside faces of the hooks. A spring which has stretched during use will not apply the correct tension to the pulley; replace the spring.
  12. If you can test the tension of the spring, look for 8.4 lbs. of tension at 50mm of length. If in doubt, replace the spring.
  13. Reinstall the camshaft timing belt pulley, making sure the pulley fits properly on the shaft and that the timing marks align correctly. Tighten the center bolt to 43 ft. lbs.
  14. Before reinstalling the belt, double check that the crank and camshafts are exactly in their correct positions. The alignment mark on the end of the camshaft bearing cap should show through the small hole in the camshaft pulley and the small mark on the crankshaft timing belt pulley should align with the mark on the oil pump.
  15. Reinstall the timing belt idler pulley and the tension spring. Pry the pulley to the left as far as it will go and temporarily tighten the retaining bolt. This will hold the pulley in its loosest position.
  16. Install the timing belt, observing the matchmarks made earlier. Make sure the belt is fully and squarely seated on the upper and lower pulleys.
  17. Loosen the retaining bolt for the timing belt idler pulley and allow it to tension the belt.
  18. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crank clockwise 2 full revolutions from TDC to TDC. Insure that each timing mark realigns exactly.
  19. Tighten the timing belt idler pulley retaining bolt to 27 ft. lbs.
  20. Measure the timing belt deflection (Tool 23600 B or similar), looking for 5-6mm of deflection at 4.4 pounds of pressure. If the deflection is not correct, readjust the idler pulley by repeating steps 15 through 18.
  21. Remove the bolt from the end of the crankshaft.
  22. Install the timing belt guide onto the crankshaft and install the lower timing belt cover.
  23. Continue reassembly of the timing belt covers as outlined previously in this section.

TO LOOSEN THE BELT TENSIONER PULLEY ASSEMBLY, THEN POSITION A CAMSHAFT BELT ADJUSTER TOOL T74P-6254-A OR EQUIVALENT ON THE TENSION SPRING ROLL PIN AND RETRACT THE BELT TENSIONER AWAY FROM THE TIMING BELT.TIGHTEN THE ADJUSTMENT BOLT TO LOCK THE TENSIONER IN THE RETRACTED POSITION. INSTALL NEW TIMING OVER THE CRANKSHAFT SPROCKET AND THEN COUNTERCLOCKWISE OVER THE AUXILIARY AND CAMSHAFT SPROCKETS MAKING SURE THE LUGS ON THE BELT PROPERLY ENGAGE THE SPROCKET TEETH ON THE PULLEYS. BECAREFUL NOT TO ROTATE THE PULLEYS WHEN INSTALLING THE BELT.RELEASE THE TIMING BELT TENSIONER PULLEY ALLOWING THE TENSIONER TO TAKE UP THE SLACK. IF THE SPRING DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH TENSION TO MOVE THE ROLLER AGAINST THE BELT.AND BELT HANGS LOOSE, IT MIGHT BE NECESSARY TO MANUALLY PUSH THE ROLLER AGAINST THE BELT AND TIGHTEN THE BOLT.   1. Rotate the engine so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. Check that the timing marks are aligned on the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys. An access plug is provided in the cam belt cover so that the camshaft timing can be checked without removal of the cover or any other parts. Set the crankshaft to TDC by aligning the timing mark on the crank pulley with the TDC mark on the belt cover. Look through the access hole in the belt cover to make sure that the timing mark on the cam drive sprocket is lined up with the pointer on the inner belt cover.
Always turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation. Backward rotation may cause the timing belt to jump time, due to the arrangement of the belt tensioner.
  1. Drain cooling system. Remove the upper radiator hose as necessary. Remove the fan blade and water pump pulley bolts.
CAUTION When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.
  1. Loosen the alternator retaining bolts and remove the drive belt from the pulleys. Remove the water pump pulley.
  2. Loosen and position the power steering pump mounting bracket and position it aside.
  3. Remove the four timing belt outer cover retaining bolts and remove the cover. Remove the crankshaft pulley and belt guide.
  4. Loosen the belt tensioner pulley assembly, then position a camshaft belt adjuster tool (T74P-6254-A or equivalent) on the tension spring rollpin and retract the belt tensioner away from the timing belt. Tighten the adjustment bolt to lock the tensioner in the retracted position.
  5. Remove the timing belt.
To install:
  1. Install the new belt over the crankshaft sprocket and then counterclockwise over the auxiliary and camshaft sprockets, making sure the lugs on the belt properly engage the sprocket teeth on the pulleys. Be careful not to rotate the pulleys when installing the belt.
  2. Release the timing belt tensioner pulley, allowing the tensioner to take up the belt slack. If the spring does not have enough tension to move the roller against the belt (belt hangs loose), it might be necessary to manually push the roller against the belt and tighten the bolt.
The spring cannot be used to set belt tension; a wrench must be used on the tensioner assembly.
  1. Rotate the crankshaft two complete turns by hand (in the normal direction of rotation) to remove the slack from the belt, then tighten the tensioner adjustment and pivot bolts to specifications. Refer to the necessary illustrations. Make sure the belt is seated properly on the pulleys and that the timing marks are still in alignment when No. 1 cylinder is again at TDC/compression.
  2. Install the crankshaft pulley and belt guide.
  3. Install the timing belt cover.
  4. Install the water pump pulley and fan blades. Install upper radiator hose if necessary. Refill the cooling system.
  5. Position the alternator and drive belts, then adjust and tighten it to specifications.
  6. Start the engine and check the ignition timing. Adjust the timing, if necessary.

Here is the trick. Align marks. Put the timing belt on the crank shaft pulley first, and after on the overhead cam pulley. Release tensioner and rotate the crank shaft till the timing belt makes two full circles. Try to align marks, you will be at least one tooth off. Align the crank shaft on the mark, and find out how many teeth you are off at the cam shaft pulley. Count the teeth. Remove the timing belt from cam shaft pulley only. Move cam shaft pulley in reverse according to the number of teeth you counted. Make sure the crank shaft pulley is on the mark. Mount the belt at cam shaft pulley.Rotate the belt two circles and check the marks. Repeate this procedure til after releasing the tensioner, and rotating the timing belt two full circles, the mars will be align.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Turn the crankshaft to align the timing belt matchmarks and set cylinder No. 1 to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Once in this position, the engine must NOT be turned or disturbed.
  3. Remove all necessary components to gain access to the cylinder head and timing belt covers.
  4. Remove the cylinder head and timing belt covers.
  5. There are 2 belts in this system; the one running to the camshaft pulley is the timing belt. The other, shorter one drives the balance shafts and is referred to as the balancer belt or timing balancer belt. Lock the timing belt adjuster in position by installing one of the lower timing belt cover bolts to the adjuster arm.
  6. Loosen the timing belt and balancer shafts tensioner adjuster nut, but do not loosen the nut more than 1 turn. Push the tensioner for the balancer belt away from the belt to relieve the tension. Hold the tensioner and tighten the adjusting nut to hold the tensioner in place.
  7. Carefully remove the balancer belt. Do not crimp or bend the belt; protect it from contact with oil or coolant. Slide the belt off the pulleys.
  8. Remove the balancer belt drive sprocket from the crankshaft.
  9. Loosen the lockbolt installed to the timing belt adjuster and loosen the adjusting nut. Push the timing belt adjuster to remove the tension on the timing belt, then tighten the adjuster nut.
  10. Remove the timing belt. Do not crimp or bend the belt; protect it from contact with oil or coolant. Slide the belt off the pulleys.
  11. If defective, remove the belt tensioners by performing the following:
    1. Remove the springs from the balancer belt and the timing belt tensioners.
    2. Remove the adjusting nut.
    3. Remove the bolt from the balancer belt adjuster lever, then remove the lever and the tensioner pulley.
    4. Remove the lockbolt from the timing belt tensioner lever, then remove the tensioner pulley and lever from the engine.
  12. This is an excellent time to check or replace the water pump. Even if the timing belt is only being replaced as part of a good maintenance schedule, consider replacing the pump at the same time. To install:
  13. If the water pump is to be replaced, install a new O-ring and make certain it is properly seated. Install the water pump and retaining bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  14. If the tensioners were removed, perform the following to install them:
    1. Install the timing belt tensioner lever and tensioner pulley. NOTE: The tensioner lever must be properly positioned on its pivot pin located on the oil pump. Be sure that the timing belt lever and tensioner moves freely and does not bind.
    2. Install the lockbolt to the timing belt tensioner, do not tighten the lockbolt at this time.
    3. Install the balancer belt pulley and adjuster lever.
    4. Install the adjusting nut and the bolt to the balancer belt adjuster lever. Do not tighten the adjuster nut or bolt at this time. NOTE: Be sure that the balancer lever and tensioner moves freely and does not bind.
    5. Install the springs to the tensioners.
    6. Move the timing belt tensioner its full deflection and tighten the lockbolt.
    7. Move the balancer its full deflection and tighten the adjusting nut.
  15. The crankshaft timing pointer must be perfectly aligned with the white mark on the flywheel or flex-plate; the camshaft pulley must be aligned so that the word UP is at the top of the pulley and the marks on the edge of the pulley are aligned with the surfaces of the head.
  16. Install the timing belt over the pulleys and tensioners.
  17. Loosen the bolt used to lock the timing belt tensioner. Loosen, then tighten the timing belt adjusting nut.
  18. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise until the cam pulley has moved 3 teeth; this creates tension on the timing belt. Loosen, then tighten the adjusting nut and tighten it to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Tighten the bolt used to lock the timing belt tensioner.
  19. Realign the timing belt marks, then install the balancer belt drive sprocket on the crankshaft.
  20. Align the front balancer pulley; the face of the front timing balancer pulley has a mark, which must be aligned with the notch on the oil pump body. This pulley is the one at 10 o'clock to the crank pulley when viewed from the pulley end.
  21. Align the rear timing balancer pulley (2 o'clock from the crank pulley) using a 6 x 100mm bolt or rod. Mark the bolt or rod at a point 2.9 in. (74mm) from the end. Remove the bolt from the maintenance hole on the side of the block; insert the bolt or rod into the hole. Align the 2.9 in. (74mm) mark with the face of the hole. This pin will hold the shaft in place during installation.
  22. Install the balancer belt. Once the belts are in place, be sure that all the engine alignment marks are still correct. If not, remove the belts, realign the engine and reinstall the belts. Once the belts are properly installed, slowly loosen the adjusting nut, allowing the tensioner to move against the belt. Remove the pin from the maintenance hole and reinstall the bolt and washer.
  23. Turn the crankshaft 1 full turn, then tighten the adjuster nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Remove the bolt used to lock the timing belt tensioner.
  24. Install the lower cover, ensuring the rubber seals are in place. Install a new seal around the adjusting nut, DO NOT loosen the adjusting nut.
  25. Install the key on the crankshaft and install the crankshaft pulley. Apply oil to the bolt threads and tighten it to 181 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
  26. Install the upper timing belt cover and all applicable components. When installing the side engine mount, tighten the bolt and nut attaching the mount to the engine to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) and the through-bolt and nut to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
