Question about 2003 BMW M3

3 Answers

My 04 M3 with SMG won't start. I have an active fault which won't clear even If I disconnect the battery (fault#59. Actuation, clutch dynamic)...I can hear smg pump every tim that I turn ignition on but no luck...transmission show to be in neutral, I can actually move the car by pushing, but the car won't start. The recall about the relay has been done so I don't know what to think or do?

I can clearly hear the fuel pump working. I have no crank at all, its like starter is not getting the order to start. engine displacement : 198 cu.in. Car was acting up while I was driving. I normally drive in manual mode but I had change to auto when it happens. after I stopped, car did not start anymore. It happened one time before, like two weeks ago, but back then I cleared the memory which had the same fault and car started again until now. Are you familiar wih this fault?

Well, my M3 won't start. Has no crank at all. This vehicle has an SMG tranmission, are you familiar with it? This The SMG computer has a fault stored that won't clear(#59. Actuation, clutch dynamic...it seems that starter is not receiving signal to start even when transmission shows to be in Neutral. Hood switches are Ok. The same situation happened to me two weeks ago, it had the same fault but I was able to cleared it a t that time and vehicle did start after that...I already ask another "expert" and I don't think he was familiar with BMW M3s. Are you? Can you help me?

  • leslieralvea Nov 16, 2009

I actually used a diagnostic tool to clear memory also and the fault and transmission light remain there! Thank you for the tip on how to get one but for now that won't help me on getting to the root of the problem.

Well you have done a few things so you have had a go thats good
NOW you say you can hear the pump working,, so that rules out the Immobiliser fault ,but try turning off the key 10 times from off to start position and it should start on the 11 time???.
You could also try bypassing the starter motor relay as then you will no weather its the relay at fault or not.

Removing the battery does not always clear error codes and you will need a diagnostic tool to overcome/clear or read this error and proceed further. There is a program called digimotolite which is free and works on most post 1997 vehicles,do a google search and download it.Then go on ebay and look for something called ELM 327 cable which will allow you to connect your pc to your car and it becomes a diagnostic tool...There you go,you got yourself a diagnostic tool for less than 30 usd or so...worth 4,000 usd!! Now when you diagnose you will get some error codes which you need to google in order to understand what needs changing..Hope this helps..O by the way, any repair done will need a reset using the diagnostic tool.

How many liters is this engine? Have you checked all relays (including fuel pump)? You can check them with an ohmmeter to see if they are good enough.
Also on the fuel rail, there is a fuel pressure test port that you can put a rag on top of port and press in the valve. Or use a fuel pressure tester. There should be plenty of pressure, if not, pressure regulator, fuel pump or pump relay may be bad for fuel filter could be clogged.

The next thing to check for would be spark. Spark starts at the crankshaft position sensor, to ignition module & coil packs, to plug wires, and then spark plugs. If there is no spark, test the crank sensor and ignition tumbler for power.

Lastly, the ECM, test the outputs to the igniton system from ecm to make sure ignition is getting and sending power.
You can also test almost every sensor with an ohmmeter to see if it has resistance.
You can go to autozone.com and register for full free online repair manual for your vehicle.

Yes I do. I have had to replace a few smog pump bearings. When the bearings go, they go, Usually less than 100 miles from the time they start making noise or become faulty. Once a fault is noted, it sends a pulse to the ECM (car's computer) and shuts it down so that engine doesn't get wreched. You will have to replace the smog pump or test the circuits with an ohmmeter to determine if it's the pump or the wiring. Once repair is made, clear code, and then you should be good to drive. If problem is not fixed, the error code will return and shut down computer.

Oh, by the way, I was just wondering what engine LITER size this is?

The Netural safety switch could be bad. Have you tested that? It is a common problem. If switch is bad the starter won't engage. If anti-thef unit is activated, the starter won't engage, if starter relay is faulty the starter won't engage. Even if some components are working, that doesn't necessarily mean there is enough power to turn starter. Have you had battery and solenoid tested? Are all connections a tight metal-to-metal connection?

Did you test the neutral/safety switch, tranny actuator, and vacuum lines?

Could be a failing starter or problems with the cables.
A dead cell in the battery will do it too.

Bmw m3 2003wont start

For about the last 20 years or so, most cars are equipped not to start if you press on the gas while turning the key. This is used for diagnostic purposes. DO NOT press on the gas peddle while attempting to start a fuel injected car.
