To check engine oil level engine needs to be off, if check while engine running, oil will splash inside oil pan and all over your dip stick giving you bad reading, Check oil level with engine off and add to full mark on oil dip stick. Running engine with low oil will cause major damage to your engine. To check transmission level engine needs to be running at normal engine temp.

Car is cold dipstick shows full when hot shows low

Don't worry to much about that as long as it is with in range on the dip stick. When cold all the oil has drained back to the sump and when hot some of the oil is still up in the heads around the valve gear.

Possible lifter knock, been very cold here in midwest. runs fine in cold weather. warming up and i get a knock from engine. removed oil cap and does not really get louder ?? does go away and comes bac

Your hearing lifter noise common in most cars in cold weather I have a 2001 sc1 same engine as yours here's how to get rid of that ticking sound go buy a quart of Lucas synthetic motor treatment change your oil and leave it 1 quart low add the Lucas synthetic oil stabilizer within 1 week you will not hear the noise agian reason your hearing the noise is there's no oil at the top of the engine on a cold start oil when cold is thicker hints why your noise in your engine what Lucas does is eliminate the dry start by the way my engine has 288,000 and does not use a drop of oil after you use this product you should use it every oil change you will see your car will thank you regards Chris

Antifreeze overflow from tank

I would check for visible cracks and leaking at the overflow tank when the engine is cold, then when the engine is running and at operating temperature and not running and at operating temperature as well as during cool down. Also check the coolant overflow hose for leaks or obstructions inside the hose or if the hose is kinked. Check to make sure that the overflow tank cap is damage free and securely fastened.

I have a 2001 saturn sl. the car just turned off and the oil pressure light turned on. Now the car wont start and the light continues to stay on. the car has oil.

you are looking at two unrelated things. when the car died, the oil pressure dropped off causing the light to come on. this is normal. when the key is on but the engine is not running, there is no oil pressure so the light will be on. dont be concerned about the oil light and start diagnosing your no start.

WHAT i MEANT WAS WHEN THE CAR IS OFF AND COLD IT SHOWS NO OIL BUT WHEN THE CAR WAS ALLOWED TO WARM UP AND THAN TURNED OFF THE OIL SHOWS FULL IS THIS NORMAL

Sir,
This is definatly not normal. what actually happens is that there is less oil in the engine but when you turn on the car and let it get warm in mean while the oil comes up on the chamber and shows that oil is full and later it sank back to lower oil chamber. So the point is that you need to get oil refiled in the car and there might be leakage in the car oil chamber. thank you.
