if you press the gas right after starting will it rev up fine if so try cleaning the trottle body with a lint free cloth and some trottle body cleaner if that doesn't solve the problem try replacing the idle control vavle (on the back trottle body.)

Test manifold air temp and coolant temp senders...one may be out of range, causing the computer to be confused about how much fuel to add. A small vacuum leak can also give similar symptoms.

Check fuel pressure, the fuel pressure should be about 49psi ( + or - 5 psi).

My 4.2 liter 6 cylinder has a shutting off problem wether driving or just Idling. It seems to lose all electrical power but it seems to reset after awhile. The reason I think electrical is when it quits...

replace ignition module, found behind radiator recovery. Had same problem with my jeep and it cost me over $1000 form the jeep dealer, because they could not find the mod.

When starting cold it turns over and runs for 2 sec. then stalls. Does this 2-3 times then will idle low til and runs rough till warm . When warm runs like a top.

Have the choke setting on your carb checked. if its fuel injected model---have the air and temperature sensors checked out

2001 Jeep Wrangler HP loss

1. did you put oversized tires on the vehicle, if so that changes the gear ratio and will result in power loss,
2.. the catylitic coverter is plugged, often the coverter breaks apart and the pieces find there way to the outlet pipe and restrict exaust flow .
3. a fuel pump probem, low fuel presure under a load, however this condition will make the eng run lean, and most likey set a check eng light,

Backfiring and loss of power

'till you do some in depth testing of all systems, I'd place equal weight on every possibility. Make sure you cover the basics like fuel filter etc before getting crazy with it though. Also check cap. rotor, coil and wires. Idle cylinder pressure is different than that encountered when driving. This additional pressure will cause ignition spark to seek a better easier ground,(not the spark plugs where it should be going) causing missing under load. After checking , if you haven't found anything, its time to begin testing fuel pump pressures, modules and controls.
good luck
