Question about 1998 Plymouth Voyager

1 Answer

Friday it sputtered and shut off 2 times the thrid time I started it I gave it some gas and it drove for a few feet then started sputtering and smoking from the right side of the engine. I pulled over turned it off popped the hood the smoke was coming from the bottom corner near where all the pulleys and belts are. No worn belts nothing wrong there but it smells like burning rubber. I started the car it made this whining sound for about a minute then stopped and drove fine. Drives fine now but every few times you start it up it makes that whining sound. Had a friend look at it and he pointed out the melted rubber sprayed all over the engine bay but we can't find where anything came off to melt..... any ideas?

Have the water pump checked. The bearing maybe seizing up causing the pulley to jam and smoke up the belt. Also as the motor got hot from pump not spinning, may have caused the motor to shut down as an overheating precatuion.

My car is sputtering and dying. If I try to restart it, it will immediately go into sputtering/dying mode. If I wait a while an hour or so it will start up and drive fine.

When was the last time that the carburetor was stripped and cleaned? Also have you checked the fuel filter? Finally, the problem seems to come and go as the engine is run (and it gets hot) check that the fuel line and any electrical cables are well away from the hot engine as far as is possible.

The coil could be breaking down under normal operating temps, or the pick inside the distributor. Either that or you may have oxygen sensors that are going bad, do you have a check engine light come on when it acts up?

I changed the battery and the alternator and my lights went out and the car shut off

Check your fusible links leaving the positive battery cable, wires could be burnt or swollen.just check all wires coming from positive side of battery. Also check all fuses in fuse box.

Engine sputtered and died, starts back up and idles, as soon as put into gear and drove a few feet sputters and dies again. ??? Mechanic is saying cataliytic converter but car only has 60000 miles

That sounds more like lack of fuel pressure due to worn pump, plugged fuel filter, or defective fuel pressure regulator. The engine computer should be read with a rented scanner to determine the area of the trouble. Don't just replace parts until it runs--usually, a very expensive repair process. If the engine uses a rubber timing belt to the cams, the mileage is about right to change it (them) too (as a precaution). Hope this helps!
