Haw do i adjust clutch cable on 1997 geo tracker

the book shows 2 ways
the FSM
1/2in play at pedal or 1/8 " inch at bell lever.
most of these cars the cable is long gone bad inside.
and jams, and in the end, you brake the pedal, arm, or spine or worse.
its all there, play, pedal height,
and links to real FSM pages.

The clutch on my 1998 legacy has just been replaced, but there is about four inches free travel in clutch pedal before it engages the throwout bearing. This leaves only about 2-3 inches at the bottom of...

You want to shorten the cable. Loosen the lock nut.Turn the cable adjuster clockwise to shorten the cable. This takes some skill, and knowledge to get the clutch adjusted just right. You want about 1/2 inch of free play in the pedal. All of this varies according to the wear on your clutch. You say your clutch is new, so acheving a proper adjustment should be no problem. Keep tweaking the adjustment to get it catching where you like it.

Car stalls when braking

It appears that the clutch is not releasing properly when you push the pedal down. How much free-play does the pedal have when you start to push it down? It should be about 3/4 inch or so. With the engine off and in first gear, have someone push the clutch pedal down all the way while you try to rock the car back and forth. If it is trying to turn the engine while you do this, the clutch is either not capable of being released or the clutch hydraulic system is delivering insufficient oil to the slave cylinder at the clutch release arm/shaft. If this worked correctly before the new parts were put in, the person(s) that did the work should be responsible for getting it to work again. Make sure that you don't have several floor mats that are under the pedal thus preventing full clutch release. Hope this helps!
