Question about 1990 Audi 100

1 Answer

I have a 1990 Audi 100 (NON QUATTRO) and had the ignition switch fail. I have the shop manual and carefully followed the procedure for accessing the switch. I have the steering wheel off and the instrument cluster out. The manual states that this is the point at which I can access the switch. HAH!! There is a HEAVY metal dash support that is blocking any access to the switch from the top(through cluster opening). The bottom has a plastic U channel protecting the wiring harness that prevents access from the bottom. Any advice/tricks/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Removing the channel seems to involve removing the entire dash. Even if the channel was removed, the access to the switch will not improve(SWITCH IS IN THE DASH, NOT ON THE COLUMN) Also, according to the shop manual, the screws that hold the switch onto the cylinder are accessed from the top(through cluster opening) The manual CLAIMS it is not necessary to remove the steering column.

Hi Jim-if you remove the plastic channel you can get to the bolts that holds the steering cullumn in place, remove that bolts and drop the cullumn, you should be able to remove the ignition.

Car wont start after getting a new key and replacing batteries -

hi well this is a bit long so if you can bare with me i will try explain how to , clear system to decode, and recode as this is what it sounds like that the coding has gone from the ignition key....ok here goe's
to sync key with car depress lock or unlock button manually lock the drivers door within 30 seconds of the above system should now work....if not do next bit
switch ignition on ( using non chip key ) manually lock drivers door using key ( another one, hopefully you will have more than one) press unlock button 5 times, in one second intervals indicators flash 5x for every time signal is received switch ignition off and remove key
that's the de-programming done...
to de-program the system if above fails..........
switch ignition on ( use key without remote ) manually lock drivers door using key to be synced with car complete the following within 30 seconds of doing above within 5 seconds press the unlock button on key indicators should flash once wait 5 seconds press unlock button once to confirm programming vehicle should unlock this also will confirm deactivation of programming mode switch ignition off remove key..that should be it, then try new programed key in ignition.

to re-program system and sync with key switch ignition on manually lock drivers door using key ( another one, hopefully you will have more than one) press unlock button 5 times, in one second intervals indicators flash 5x for every time signal is received switch ignition off and remove key
that should be it, if no joy then will have to main dealer i am afraid...hope this helps

I have a 1990 audi quattro V8, both low lights went out.. Marker lights and high beams both work

I would check the low beam fuses. Also maybe a bad dimmer switch. Check to see if you have power at the low beam headlight plug.

Sounds like a bad ignition switch. It has terminal 50 (starter activation) but no terminal 15 (ignition on) activation.
