Question about 1997 Chrysler Sebring

97 crysler sebring convertible wont start cranks but no fire replaced the timing belt and pullys distributer cap and rotter button the plugs and wires were replaced last month it has no fire the symptoms it was having then was it was cutting out jerking while driving and quit running a few times at stop lights kinda like bad gas or something but we filled the car with gas and cleaner and changed the plugs and wires seemed to help then it just wouldnt start the other morring we th ought it might have jumped time sence the high miliage did the timing belt and pullys can you help? tks B.Good

    we put a crank sencer in the car didnt help codes showing are 12 11 24 will a bad throtel position cause it not to fire?

Hmmmm...are you sure when you changed the timing belt that all the timing marks were ligned up correctly?

Did you check to make sure you had no damaged valves?

Let me also say that on my 97 pathfinder it ran good up until i replaced the water pump. then it wouldnt start. so i changed the spark plug wires and plugs. same thing...wants to start just wont fire up....


My first thought was the timing belt was not in time since you have to remove the belt to get to the pump.
The crank sensor is near the flywheel so it should not have been touched.
But timing should not affect the spark coming out of the coil.
It could be a problem with the resistor for the coil or something with the computer.
Did you also replace the cap and rotor when you changed the distributor ? Is the spark weak coming out of the coil ?
You may have to get a used shop manual from Ebay to get the test procedures and wiring diagram for the ignition system.

If you have a check engine light go to Auto Zone and use their borrow a tool offer to borrow a code reader. There are several things that can cause this. Check the fuses in the interior fuse panel and make sure they are all intact and not blown. If all the fuses are good check the ignition relay in the power distribution center under the hood. If that and the fuses are good your next test would be the ignition switch itself.

Took distributer out and changed dist rotor and dist cap. Put ne spark plugs and wires. Now wont start and backfires while trying to start.


You have the Engine Out Of Time you will have to bring number 1 cylinder to Top dead center do this by turning the Crank bolt Clockwise Have the valve cover off so you can watch the Intake and Exhaust Valve`s open and close as number one piston comes up on a firing stroke make sure you have the number one cylinder coming up on a firing stroke. Watch Intake valve open and close as you turn the Crank.when pisten gets dead top of this STROKE DROP THE DISTRIBUTER; Start the Firing Order right where the Rotery Button is inside the Distributer cap

Did you check the timing belt to see if it broke? It ha a 2.5 and it has belt. Remove timing cover at the front of the engine and have someone crank it while you watch the cam to see if it turns. If it doesn't turn, replace the belt.

did you know how to replace timing belt it has to be installed in a specified way or it wont start
if it broke and you replaced it then the story is different as if it breaks while running usually it also bends your valves you should see a technician for this

My kids 1991 Honda Accord won't start. It crank, it has sparks but it just won't start. I change the spurge plugs, the plug wires, the ignition cap, the rotter, the ignition behind, and there are gas....


Take the distributer cap off, and turn the engine. If the rotor doesn't turn, your timing belt is broken. If it does turn, aim a timing light at the crank and see what the timing marks are doing. If they are jumping all over the place, and not staying in one position, your timing belt has jumped and will need to be replaced. Good luck. Let me know how you make out.

Yes a timing belt could cause this. Ususally if the timing belt breaks/slips the engine will have a different sound while cranking it over to try to start it. Does it sound different? Also, if possable remove the cam position senser and look at the tone wheel that the senser reads and have someone crank the engine to see if the tone wheel turns, if not the timing belt is most likely the problem. I have seen a few tone wheels have problems but it is not common. What engine do you have?

Just replaced timing belt,cam crank seals, rotor. No start. Set timing and nothing. Fire,fuel,and compression are present. Any ideas?


Did you align the second lower cam that drives the oil pump and sitributer?  There is a dot on the cam that needs to align with the notch on the main pully of the crankshaft.   An easy quick test is to rotate the engine to TDC and take the distributer cap off.  It should be pointing in roughly the 2 o'clock position for cylinder 1
