I would try an auto-part store. Normally, they would hook up a engine light code reader to give you the trouble code for free. With the code reader, you can clear the troubles and the engine light should turn off.

The engine light came on and it said "service engine soon". I called On-star and they said to drive it seven more times. They said the diagnostic code was P0442. I looked it up and it said possible

I don't know the age of your car, but it is likely the O ring on the gas cap is leaking, not allowing the fuel system to work properly. If you forgot to put on the gas cap or did not tighten it, after seven runs, the check engine light should clear. If it does not, then the easiest solution is to buy a new gas cap from the dealer. It will be about $25 - $30, and you can install it yourself. After installing the new cap, and seven trips later, IF the gas cap was the problem, the light should clear.

I have tried to replace the O ring on a cap before, but found it nearly impossible. Another trick would is to lightly coat the O ring with vasoline - then seven trips to see if that clears the light. This is only a temporary solution, but it may tell you if the problem is the gas cap. Godd luck!

What does it mean when engine light is on

Hi George:
If the "Check Engine" light came on soon after a fill-up at a gas station, check if your gas cap is closed properly. If the gas cap wasn't on tight, this could be the problem. Secure the gas cap properly and if there is no other problems, the "Check Engine" light should clear itself out in a few days of driving. If the gas cap was tight, there is some other problem. Have your car computer scanned to see what is wrong. It could be some minor problem, but it also could be something more serious that can cause more damage to your vehicle if not repaired in time. Some garages or parts stores often offer to scan your computer for free. Others will charge you a diagnostic fee. If your car is fairly new, I'd advise to visit your dealer for this, because it's possible that the problem is still covered by the original warranty and can be repaired for free or a minimum charge. Check your owner's manual for more details.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

My gas cap wasn't put on properly after my last fill. The check engine light came on, so of course I put the gas cap back on correctly but now the Check Engine Light is staying on. I only drive it in...

It may go out on its own, the next time the computer does a routine system check. If two or three runs around town over the next few days doesn't clear it, only a dealer or a good mechanic with the proper scanner can turn it off.

Is it possible to rest the engine management light on a 2004 Dodge Dakota without visiting the dealers. I believe it has come on due to filling with premium grade gas. Thanks in advance.

Most auto parts stores offer free reading and resets of engine lights. Just call a local parts store and see is they have the capabilities and they will tell you what turned the light on. Premium gas should not cause a check engine light but not tightening the gas cap enough will.

CHECK GAS CAP / ENGINE SERVICE ARE ON

Most likely an evap system fault code stored in engine computer. Best bet and cheapest thing is go to the dealer and buy a new cap. Install the cap and drive the car for a few days if the light goes off, your all set, if not you need to check for codes. Then probably find a leak or a faulty evap vent valve or purge valve.

My check engine light came on. The dealership said "filler neck leaking causing evaporative leak." The gas cap also says "loose cap will turn on check engine light." Would like to try a new gas cap but...

sad to say sir that how to clear the code is not easy in manual clearing, you need diagnostic tool to clear the dtc, but some dtc will cleared by 20-50 consecutive warm up if no other trouble code detected by the computer

Check engine light comes on in a 07 sebring when the gas cap is removed and the engine is started there is no change in the indicator.

this is normal, you should not have engine running when re-fueling, fuel gauge moves very slowly if key is on while fueling, turn key off and then on and should read proper level.

Check engine light comes on

The infamous 'Check Engine' light turns on for any of several reasons. Some are incredibly simple to fix and should be checked before you spend anything going to a dealer or mechanic. Most newer vehicles have a gas tank pressure sensing monitor which will give an inaccurate error and turn on the light if your gas cap is not replaced properly. Unscrew the gas cap completely and replace, making sure to tighten it securely. Start the car and check the light again.
Other things to check yourself are the fluid levels making sure that filler caps are properly secured.
If after trying all the DIY fixes the light remains on you'll need to take it a mechanic. With any luck, one of the DIY fixes will work and save you $$$
