Question about 1978 Chevrolet C1500

My 1978 Chevy truck will choke down and die

My 1978 Chevy truck is acting up. Sometimes when I drive 15-20 miles it wants to choke down and sometimes die. Other times it runs perfectly like it came off the show room floor. The only thing that is not stock on it is the Holley 4-barrel carburator that I have had for 4 years. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreaciate them. By the way it has a 350 engine.

    When I say choking down I mean power loss. There is no smoke out the tail pipe and the choke is manual. Dog Spalls thanks for your input, I was thinking along the same lines makes me feel better about spending the money.

Not sure what "choke down" means. If you mean run really rich and smoke black, like the choke is stuck, look at the choke linkage. If you mean lay down and give no power, but not smoke black and not sound farty and blubbery, that is likely not a choke problem.

Look at the fuel filter. They can be mostly clogged but pass enough fuel to get by under most situations; also their internal gunk load can shift, causing a filter that was serving okay to be clogged at a moment's notice.

Check the gas cap and the tank vent / evaporative emissions system - if air can't get in to replace the fuel you removed from the tank, pretty soon your fuel pump is trying to **** fuel out of a tank that is already under a vacuum.

If those two are OK, throw an ignition coil in it. They are cheap and easy enough, and a failing one will intermittently lay down and give weak sparks. If you can catch the truck in its failure mode, try loosening one of the plug wires (either end) and holding it a half inch away from its previous mount. You should get fat bright blue sparks jumping the gap, snapping as they fly; if they won't jump that far, or sound or look wimpy, your coil is suspect.

If you change your coil and the problem goes away, give the truck a tune-up - cap, rotor, plugs, and wires, and also change the ignition module (an extra $20 for a cheapie.) Coils don't die of old age; they die of overwork, like trying to push very high voltage through high-resistance spark plug wires and across worn-out plugs. The ignition module has to handle all of the power that goes through the coil, and if the coil is stressed, so is the module. They can fail without warning, stranding you until the module cools down enough (30 minutes to six hours) that it will run again.

My chevy s10 died going down the road. It turns over but wont start

I have 94 s 10..4.3 v6. it does the same thing have replaced fuel pump and filter,ignition module,cap rotor plugs wires,coil,ground strap...driving down the road jus dies like the key got shut off....for a while when troubleshooting through the parts you could get it to when it dies it cranks really hard when trying to restart..ive checked the timeing its fine....if i wait a few min it will usually start...sometimes it will show a check engine light sometimes not......never know when it will happen sometimes jus down the the road from the house sometimes 100miles down the road......sometimes three times in a mile sometimes not for weeks at a time..Wtf...Im ready to shoot it like a lame horse....its a shame too its a sharp lil truck thats a two owner and never spent a night outside in its life...i knew the original owner ...i bought it with 90,000 on it it only has 148,000 now and still looks like new...

Havig trouble with maintaing speed

The electric switch is for the downshift solenoid on the 400 turbo. It will work with out it but you will have to downshift the trans manually. When it dies does it act like you just shut the key off or does it run bad first?

My 1978 ford bronco dies and doesnt want to restart. The motor has 2000 miles on it. It has a new electric fuel pump,coil distributor, cap,rotor, wires, plugs. it does the same exact thing with 2 diferant...

Float could be stuck, if it's carbureted or gasket under carb could be loose. Tighten and also put new filter in it. Could be bad injectors, if it's EFI which I doubt knowing the year. Could be choke setting wrong. I like manual choke myself. Try starting it with something holding choke open like a screwdriver handle. Something not too flammable.

I have a 1978 Chevy Camper Van that has a problem. When I try to start it after it has sat for a period of time I have to prime the carborater. Also has a problem with it's choke. Sometimes it acts like...

the check valve in the fuel pump may have gone bad causing fuel to leave the carb and lines thus losing the prime far as the choke i wonder if it is getting power and if the vacum pull off is working.
