some cars may have interlock with the brake switch to the shift lever inter-lock. have someone step on the brake, if brake light won't come on, suspect the brake switch is preventing the shift.

Why does my truck only go into gear sometimes and no brake lights

Year/make/model?? Most probable cause of this would be a defective brake switch as this switch controls the brake lights as well as the shift release solenoid

The gear shifter on my 1998 Pontiac SE coupe will not unlock so I can take the car out of park

Do you have column or floor shifter ?
All automatic transaxle models use an electric park lock system. Within the housing assembly, a lock cylinder is connected to an actuator which rotates and engages on the electric park lock solenoid. When the floor-shift lever is not in the park position, the actuator disengages from the electric park lock solenoid slider. This allows the lock cylinder to move to the lock position. With the shift lever in PARK and the lock cylinder in LOCK, the actuator cam is positioned against the electric park lock solenoid slider. This prevents the shift lever from shifting out of the PARK position.
The column-shift automatic transaxle model uses a flexible cable actuator instead of an electric park lock system. One end of the cable is attached to the gate assembly. The other end of the cable is attached to the column mounted housing assembly. This system functions similarly to the floor-shift ignition lock system.
The manual transaxle model uses a push button lock cylinder. A clutch start switch is used. The clutch pedal must be pressed before the engine will crank. Refer to Park Lock System Check .
CAN you turn the key on ?

I have a Lexus RX300 1999 model and have this recent problem. engine running normally but gear gets stuck in Parking mode and won't shift. had to depress the emergency button on the gear shift and

Hi there,

Some automatic vehicles rely on the brake switch (mounted on brake pedal) to be activated by depressing brake pedal. This signal then operates a relay and switch, to release the gear lever.

Firstly, I would check the brake pedal switch (are your brake lights working?).

If brake switch is confirmed OK, then inspect the relay (and related circuit components) of the gear release switch.

My gears won't shift. I can't get out of park. & My EPC light is on.. What should I do to make my car work?

the brake light switch located at the top of the brake pedal bar is not working any more. this also controls the shift lock solenoid. when depressed, the brake pedal allows one to move the shift lever from park to any gear of their choosing. had this problem vw sold me a new one for 5 bucks.

Start with the brake switch because that is what controls the part lock solenoid. The odds that both the lock solenoid and the brake switch went bad is negligible.

Hope this helps

safety switch on brake pedal. common cause is a wire breaking off. there are 1 to 2 wires going to this switch. It is located on the brake pedal bracket above the foot pad.
