Driving down the road at about 60mph the engine backfired and quit and would not restart. There was fuel being delivered by no power to turn engine over.

Check for bad fuel, but it sounds like it might be spark plugs or spark plug wires breaking down and cross firing or missing. If it is electrical you should have a rougher idle also.
The backfire could be a problem with the distributor cap or plug wires, or lack of fuel. The cap or wires could get damp and short out until the engine gets hot. The fuel pressure could be low or not steady until the engine warms up.
Start with the basics...meaning check the spark plug wires and spark plugs. While under the hood, inspect all hoses for a vacuum leak(s). Then turn the ignition key on-off-on-off- on...leave in the on position and write down the number of flashes the check engine light indicates....2 flashes = #2....pause.....3 flashes = #3.
Let start from here. Are you able to perform engine repairs or diagnostics???
Could be one of a few problems by your description. Ignitor unit(inside distributor housing) has failed.which would have no spark. P.G.M.F.I main relay failed, lose of fuel. Or very possibly has a timin belt that has jumped time or broke, this either would sound(if broke)like engine is spinning extremely fast will cranking over,(can also have someone watch through oil cap hole and see if there is cam movement while cranking over)if jumped time engine will try and stumble start but not quite, possibly backfiring while trying to start.either or requires belt replacement minimum and very good possiility of bent valves.how many miles?
