Question about 1991 Ford F150

1991 F150 stuck in 4x4 low

My 1991 F150 4x4 5speed manual transmission is stuck in 4low. it has manual locking hubs and manual transfer case shifter. its like the transfer case shifter is locked out of being able to shift. I press the clutch and brake down at the same time while the transmission is in neutral but it still seems to be locked out. I drove in reverse for about 20 feet but still wont switch out of 4low. The truck drives around fine but only in 4low.

Chk the linkage under the truck for any foriegn objects. block the tires and have a friend put light pressure on the shifter while you lightly tap the linkage.

Mine does the same.Take a hammer and lightly tap around where the linkage bolts to transfer case, after taking nut off of stud and turn linkage with an open end 10 mm,if that don't work put nut flush with stud (where linkage hooks on)and tap stud back into transfer case,it will move no more than 1/8 in..Don't put back in 4x4 until serviced.

Can i manualy take it out of 4x4

Those older fords you have to put the 4x4 selector into 2H or 2 High on the floor shifter. Then go to the front tires and in the very center of the tire there will be a knob that say Locked and Unlocked. Turn the knob to unlocked on both sides. Then you will not have front wheel dragging on the drive train and only the rear wheels will be the drive tire. TO put it back in 4x4. Turn the knob back to locked on each front tire and put the truck in 4H or 4 High to get 4x4. Only use 4L or 4Low when your stuck to prevent spinning your tires with full power.

Now if your has the automatic locking hubs I would switch them out with manual ones because the automatic ones were problematic where they get stuck or not work at all. It requires replacing the locking hub assembly which isn't that hard to do.

F150 4x4 lock in hubs and manual lock transfer works in 2h wont in4h or 4L No grinding ,light in dash is on hubs lturned to lock but nothing.

is the lever moving on transfer case or is it a inturnal silanoid?
fords are easy fixers.. if that moving then reach in to the front u-joint see they are locked if not fix that hub,, if good the shift fork in the case is broke
you can split the case with it on the truck $25 for a fork last time i fix one
just undo shaft, speedo, c-ring cone cover, center case bolts torq size?

How to engage the 4x4

This depends on what system you have installed in your truck. If you have push button 4x4 with auto locking hubs then you would put your vehicle in neutral and press the 4x4 button. You then drive froward about 10 feet and the auto locking hubs should then be engaged.

If you do not have push button control and you have a gear shifter which controls the transfer case you would push the level in 4x4 hi or low depending on what you want (while in neutral) then drive forward about ten feet so the hubs lock. If you have manual locking hubs you need to manually engage the hubs before you put it in 4x4 mode,

Hi, I can't get my transfer case shifter lever into 4 wheel low. It works easily to high. I've got a 1991 F150 4x4 XLT with auto trans and the 5.4 V8. Thanks Tom

make sure you're doing it correctly. floor shift 4wd's usually need to shove the lever to the right or left to scoot into 4LO. if you have manual hubs, make sure they're in. double check the fluid levels and mechanicals to the front Pumpkin to make sure nothings binding up, too.

How to shift into 4wd

Ford has 2 types of 4x4 system engagement. One is a knob on the dash that you just turn to 4wheel drive high or low. The other system is the 4x4 transfer case shift on the transmission tunnel (hump) between the driver and passenger seats. To shift into 4 wheel drive high while driving, just let off the gas and shift transfer case into 4H position, and continue driving. To shift into 4 wheel drive Low, stop the vehicle completely, put transmission in neutral, shift transfer case into 4Low position, put trans. in gear, and start driving. I am assuming before doing the above, you have locked in ( turned the front hubs to 4 wheel drive position.) Any further questions, let me know.

I had my 98 ford explorer in 4wd low and when i was shifting out of 4 x 4 mode there was a huge clunk, then it seems that the transfer case or transmission will not let it go back to automatic drive it is...

98's do not have hubs. Sounds like the transfer case motor did not complete it's job. These motor have problems with brushes sticking if they are not cycled periodically.
