Question about 1985 Chevrolet Sprint

3 Answers

Was driving my 1985 chevrolet sprint, got to stopsign, pushed in clutch to put in 1st geer and nothing just rolled into street. Checked clutch cable fine, checked linkage everything intact. The gear shift is like spaghetti (just moves around very very easily without pushing in clutch) While trying to put in gear it makes no noises at all no grinding nothing. I was told i need to get a new rebuilt transmission. Could it be anything else? Car was driving just fine than boom car wont go into any gear.

The fact that you feel nothing at all with your shifter sounds like a linkage issue. Check the shifter linkage all the way to the tranny. Watch the linkage while having a helper move the shifter. If you have linkage movement between the tranny and the shifter, then yes the problem is internal. If that is the case, it will probably be cheaper to buy a used tranny from a salvage yard than to have yours rebuilt. Good Luck. I hope you find this very helpful!

I would like to add a comment and a little more advice that could save you $$$ on your repair. Before you go out and purchase a new or rebuilt or salvage transmission, (if your problem is not a simple linkage issue visable on the outside of the tranny), remove your broken transmission from the car and take the top off to see what is broken, by your description, the shifter is not hitting on anything inside the case. Could be a simple and inexpensive fix and not require replacement or rebuilding, provided it was working just fine prior to the breakdown. Also worth mentioning, if you have to take the tranny out, inspect the clutch, pressure plate, and release bearing for wear...most of the cost for clutch repair is the labor involved in removing and re-installing the transmission. So while you have it out......Continued Good Luck.

Check the shift axle on the transmission,to see if the arm,on the shift axle is moving freely, remove the cable from the arm and see if it is freely turning on the axle, the part that comes out of the transmission, you will see what I mean when you remove the cable from the shift shaft arm.The retainer or the arm ,nut,or clip, may have come off.But if the whole shaft going into the transmission is turning, then it will need taking apart.I hope this was helpful, and if so,please let us know, thank you.

It sounds like you broke the input shaft to the transmission, u don't need a new trans but you will need to pull it out and tear it down, the parts will be around $200, the skill level needed is about an 8, with 10 being the most difficult, so u really need to know your stuff here, u will need some special tools a 2 &1/2 ton floor jack, 2 jack/safety stands, the car will need to be at least three feet of the ground to pull the transmission out, the trans comes out the side after the front drivers side suspension is removed, this is absolutely a two person job.

1988 geo metro, started making loud grinding noises and wont let me downshift until complete stopped. Sometimes I can downshift to 4th and thats it.

Sounds like a clutch going out. By the way, are you sure it was a 1988? Geos were only made from 1989 to 1997, then became Chevys.

You are getting a bad throw-out bearing. You will need to change it out. It is the bearing that rides on the fingers of the pressure plate.

1985 4plus3 tranny

your clutch might be worn, was any of the oil you changed somewhat metallic? Ive heard to check for a worn clutch: pull the car up to a tree, put a tire or some kind of cushion between the car and the tree put your car in its highest gear, give it gas and very slowly let your clutch out, if the clutch is good the car will shut down immediately.

After market power module for a 1987 Chevy Sprint

You might be able to find a turbo or purchase it from chevrolet. 1987-1988 there was actually a turbo chevrolet sprint it came in two colors red and white it boosted horsepower from 44 to 70 this doesn't seem like a lot but when you put it in a light car its gives it a boost. I do believe the turbo option was only available with the 5-speed transmission.
