Check the fuel filter, take it off,and see if you can blow threw it by mouth,if it is hard to blow threw at all, replace it.Was the timing belt put on,before the problem,or after the installment? If you had no problems before the belt was installed, then if,the belt is off a notch,it would cause this problem, the computer is trying to compensate for the advancement,or ******,of the timing belt. Also, have the fuel pump pressure checked to see if the pressure is just a little shy of where it is supposed to be.
E G R solenoid might be,this is true, but normally check engine light would come on,fuel filter in the tank, may be the problem, I would have the pressure checked,if it is the least bit low, replace the filter, and the pump,If trans, was doing it ,it would be harder, more of a ****,when it surged.
If they will ,see if they will let you watch them, and ask them first, what is the range, specify ,range, for the fuel pump pressure. If it is like 20 p s i to 42,witch it will not,I am use example here, and then let them do the test, after you ask them,if it is like 22 or 25,tell them to install a new pump, and filter. The computer is not a perfect tool, codes and all,it will miss things that are ,I will say, borderline, spects. And on the timing belt, they would have to pull it down to see if it is off a notch.they won`t do it for free, and if it were to be perfectly in line, they would charge you just the same.If this is at all helpful, please let them know,so they will credit me,thank you,and let me know later what happens,,,[email protected]

There is some truth to the dealer's advice; however if the vehicle is under warranty, they can manually test all of the sensors for errors. This is time consuming, and may not result in a diagnosis.
The surges could be a mal;function throttle position sensor, or MAF sensor.

The fuel filter in this car is inside the gas tank. Was told they don't need to be replaced which could be wrong. I noticed the problem a slight bit before the timing belt was replaced. Now it happens all the time at various speeds. Fuel pump sounds reasonable. What are your thoughts about EGR valve, plugs and wires and/or tranny.
Thanks for your help. I will ask the dealer to do the pressure check on the fuel pump. That's what if feels like... starved for gas. The surge is not a big "thump" or "thud" so hopefully its not the tranny. Also, is it correct to assume that a vac. hose leak somewhere would toss a code to the computer, like a bad EGR valve? Surprised that a fuel pump would not do the same thing. That's what the dealer was trying to tell me. I am not buying his logic. I think they were too lazy to test it. Anyting else you can think of that I should ask them specifically to check.... maybe the timing to make sure it did not slip? Any thing you can offer is appreciated.
Thanks for your input. Why do you think it's not tossing a code to the computer. I have had stuff go wrong with the car before that showed up in the check engine light and if not for the light coming on, I would not had a clue something was wrong. Now, with this problem, it's very evident something is screwed up, yet no code. Your thoughts??
Thanks for your comments. Will let you konw what the dealer has to say.
