i just bought a used 97 CHEROKEE but i had the same problem, when i got to looking at it i found out the front driveshaft was shot, look at that, if its not it i would say its probably the transfer case especially with an older vehicle like that which is a very expenxive repair

Sounds like you may have bent a shift fork or your cluster gear has some missing teeth on it now. I would venture to say that is it a bent shift fork. This will require the transmission be removed to gain access to inspect and repair.

It could be lash in the differential which is normal, but it could also be a loose u-joint in the driveshaft. Check the rear driveshaft u-joints.

SOURCE: 95 Jeep wrangler wont go in gear

if this is something that started suddenly, it could be a leak in your master cylinder or slave cylinder, or your fluid could be low, or there could be air in the lines. Make sure it's full of fluid, and get back to me.

If the transmission oil is full and the clutch master cylinder is full, feels normal and does not slip going up steep grades, likely the gears in the transmission are worn (usually synchros). All items above contribute to proper shift engagement.

Should my 4cyl 90 wrangler have a fifth gear

If your shift pattern printed on the handle shows a 5th position then likely you have 5th gear. Unless someone along the way swapped for a four speed and somehow used the original shift lever. There should be an ID number on the unit itself that will tell you what yours is. Also the VIN# on the vehicle itself will tell you what was originally in there. (dealer can look it up for you)

Your clutch is not disengaging. If it a hydrolic clutch chk. the fluid in resavor, Or slave cyl. for the clutch is bad, Or it has got air in it and needs to be bleed. This is a clutch problem, nothing wrong with trans. If its a manual clutch linkage its an ajustment thing. My best guess if its hydrolic slave cyl. went bad, or resavor is out of fluid.
