Question about 2004 Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

I have an 04 Dodge Intrepid with 114,000 miles on it. The oil light now comes on during idle. Once gas is applied it goes out. I have researched on the web that many have experienced the same problem-- replacing sending unit is a common suggestion. How do I do that?

The sending unit is on passenger side of the engine. It has 1 wire going to it and can be seen through wheel well when wheel is cranked.
Unfortunately, unlike other manufacturers, this will take a special tool to remove and replace. You will probably want to take it to a repair shop that handles Dodge products.

check that you have put the right amount of oil in the sump as the oil light is probably coming as the oil surges away from the pump. disregard the dip stick for a minute . There is normally around 4 litres of oil in a sump ( 1 us gallon)

Oil light comes on when braking

Your oil pump is failing.... when your engine rpm drops (when stopping) the pump and engine rpm drop to idle..(light comes on). when you accelerate (rpm's increase) the pumps start working harder and the light goes off.... I am TRULY surprised the dealer(who did you see at the dealer???) did not know this,... THIS IS BASIC STUFF!! ... I mean 090 level mechanics...

Get the oil pump replaced immediately!!!!

2004 Dodge Intrepid Check Engine Light & Bad Fuel Mileage

If it has never had plugs changed, i would suggest it. It can make a big difference.

Labor time is .8 hrs + 6 plugs = $80 - $150.

Take your car to a parts place and they will usually check and clear your light for free.

Firestone likes to up-sell everything, $650 is way too much for a basic tune up.

2004 Dodge Intrepid "jumps" occasionally when braking?

if your car has the 2.7 litre you have to change the oil every 5oookm or 3000 miles and use the exact grade as per the book.
the 2.7 has small oil galleries.
you have low oil pressure and or idle speed.check the rpm and it should be 700 unloaded at warm temp.if the iac controller is bad and there is low idle, really low rpm could trigger the oil light to come on and the transmission vacuum controls will be causing strange behavior.

first ... put a bottle or two of gas line antifreeze in the tank (it sucks up water in the fuel)... if that doesn't sort it out.... your coil pack may be dying

2004 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 engine, and oil light keeps coming on.

Major issues with the 2.7L motor. design flaw causes oil to hang in the heads and "cook" creating sludge. Sludge builds until the passage to the timing chain is blocked starving the chain and causing near instant failure...this is a "rattling" or Roulette wheel sound. The 2.7L is an "interference" type engine. When the chain breaks or jumps, the cams stop in position thus leaving the valves wherever they may land. The pistons keep on moving though....and kiss whatever valves happen to be open. Bye Bye Motor. Using Synthetic oil EARLY and exclusively cures the sludge issue. Replacing the timing chain and components at interval is crucial...don't wait for it to break or jump!

Idling speed

It is a well Known problem within the 2.7 L family ...
Here is the deal Go to the dealer get a Mopar oil sending unit.
once under the vehicle look to behind oil pan about center ways and take pigtail (wire) off sensor then remove unit .
once removed if alot of sludge is there clean area very good then install new unit and inspect wire if it connection even looks bad cut wire and add new wire (MAKE SURE TO USE HEAT SHRINK TAPE OR LIQIUD ELECTRICAL TAPE TO SEAL WIRE COMPLETELY. >>>>NOT JUST ELECTRIC TAPE<<<<)
Ok now thats done plug wire back into unit .
Note: 2.7 L engines also have sludge problems and need to have engine flush and oil pan dropped clean oil pump screen and pan then start useing synthetic oil you should be able to go about 10,000 miles useing synthetic and you will have to only change filter 2 or 3 times . this should solve issue and help extend life of motor.
