Hi from uk considering age of vehicle ? and probable high milage ? may i suggest that the best couse of action is to have a compression test on all cylinders ? this will verify if the fault your engine has is serious? or not? you may just have something as simple as miss fire ? or if compressions test revealse low comps on one or more cyls? this may be either valves leaking? or pistons /bores worn? however compression test will verify and then you will have a better idea on whether cost of repairs is more than vehicle worth?? or 2nd hand good engine from breakers? would be worth considering if engine is going to cost $$$s?to put right also if you can get 2nd engine? it would be a quick turnround one out one in probably in a few hours so hope this helps to decide ? if worst news ?

I have no check engine light on. When i drive and accelerate to 40 mph, its starts to jerk/shake in between 40mph-60mph then it smooths out and gets worse when the AC is on

engine lights mostly only report on major problems in engine and transmissions
run the fault codes to check for other sensor problems

What to do with sputtering and lack of acceleration

Scan for codes stored ion the OBD computer. Many auto parts stores can do this for you at no charge. Based on the results - a complete tune up may be in order.

Good luck!

Why car wont pick up speed when i get to 40mph then jerks and pick up speed

Does it down shift appropriately when accelerating? Normally when you stomp on the gas while in a high gear (travelling at 40mph), the transmission will downshift to a lower gear giving the car much more torque. This can cause the car to jolt or jerk forward and accelerate suddenly.

Pt cruiser jerks when acclerating, hesitates when not accelerating, fine when idle

I am not saying this is the solution or this is the problem but the PT cruiser suffer from code P0344 Which is the cam position sensor which causes misfire, the solution is a reflash of the ECM.But before a reflash the Camshaft postion sensor needs to be verified for working condition and if possible duplicated.Once the Check Engine light does come on you automatically go to limp home mode, This is the drag that you experience, the purpose is to protect the catalytic,in case there was a true condition with intermittent cam postion sensor,You need the check engine light code, then you can go from there.

My car is making a jerking/thumping feeling. I thought at first i could just feel the bumps in the road but it's gotten worse and def not the road. It mostly happens when I accelerate. What could it be?

This could be due to the gear that the car is running in as its accelerating. In a low gear, the engine will produce a shaking feeling, and the rpms will drop very low. There really is no fix for this, the gear position is determined by the car's internal computer. As soon as you've reached enough speed, this shaking should subside, as the speed/gear ratio has reached its ideal position. If this doesn't sound like what you are experiencing in your car, then it might be something more serious.
