Question about 1999 Ford Ranger SuperCab
Simpl;e answer is no one can accurately answer your question only because when rebuilding a transmission, it's not as simple as changing one single clutch pack. Although reverse is malfunctioning, chances are that most of the other clutches and internal parts are also worn.Any good rebuilder checks all seals, bushings, valve body and pump condition so that the unit does not need to be re-done a week after he does the job. Changing just the reverse clutches would inevitably lead to another failure very shortly.
I suggest you get an estimate for that work form several local shops and also check what kind of guarantee they offer, or find a scrapyard unit (though if bad, you will need to pay each time it needs to be removed and replaced if it does not work)
Opening up a transmission often is the same as opening a "surprise package" that is why no one can tell you what you'd like to know!!
