  • When replacing a water pump, it is necessary to drain the cooling system.
  • Any components--belts, fan, fan shroud, shaft spacers, or viscous drive clutch--should be removed to make the pump accessible. Some pumps are attached to the cylinder block as shown below.

  • Loosen and remove the bolts in a crisscross pattern from the center outward.
  • Insert a rag into the block opening and scrape off any remains of the old gasket.
WARNING When working on the coolant system (for example, replacing the water pump or thermostat), a certain amount of coolant will spill on the floor. The antifreeze in the coolant causes it to be very slippery. Always immediately wipe up any coolant that spills to reduce or eliminate the chance of injury.
  • When replacing a water pump, always follow the procedures recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Most often a coating of good waterproof sealer should be applied to a new gasket before it is placed into position on the water pump.
  • Coat the other side of the gasket with sealer, and position the pump against the engine block until it is properly seated.
  • Install the mounting bolts and tighten them evenly in a staggered sequence to the torque specifications with a torque wrench. Careless tightening could cause the pump housing to crack. Check the pump to make sure it rotates freely.
  • The water pumps on many late-model OHC engines are driven by the engine's timing belt. When replacing the water pump on these engines, always replace the timing belt.
  • Make sure all pulleys and gears are aligned according to specifications when installing the belt.

Waterpump leak

Hello bladresha: My name is Roger and I will help you. The water pump on the 4.0 engine is located at the rear of the motor inside of the water cross over tube. It does require special tools in order to remove and install. This pump does not bolt in or on to the motor. This is a twist and lock in pump. Just like the Cadillac Northstar motor. You will need to remove the upper hose housing from the crossover tube. Look inside of the housing and you will see the water pump. You will need to use the special tool in order to unlock the water pump. Pay close attention to the water pump when removed. There will be a notch in one of the ears. This is a location notch. The new pump must go in the same notch. I have attached a picture that shows the water pump location. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. Thank You for using Fix Ya. How do I replace water pump and timing chain on 2.4 4 cylinder Chevy Cavilier

If You Only need to replace water pump, you need a special tool to hold water pump sprocket in place while changing the pump, Just look up GM 2.2 Water pump tool on e-bay, or ask a local auto parts store if they rent one out. Garages make out like a bandit to replace these water pumps, because you need this special tool to do the job, and ti is impossible to do it without . Good Luck

I was told my cross over pipe gasket in my 98 aurora was leaking and that is the cause of my car over heating i was wondering if there was anybody that can give instructions on how to make the repair i am...

Take a good look at it. I believe this is a 4L engine, right? I had a similar issue on a 2001 Aurora, I believe same (or close) engine. I was told the cross-over was leaking and didn't want to get into it. (On the drivers side of the engine under the throttle body. You will see a big radiator hose connect to it. Well I left it go and the real issue was a leaking water pump bearing. It finally froze up on me and burned the belt and pulley driving it. The water pump replacement was not hard, just need a special tool to remove and replace. I rented one from Autozone. Anyway, I would start with the water pump and look at the gasket on the cross over to see if you can tell if it's really bad. Removing the air intake and throttle body helps getting to these parts.

Water pump replacement requires a special socket. It is ran off a small belt on the end of the from head. Remove the cover and unscrew the pump from the housing. As for the starter, remove the intake manifold, it is under the intake.

How do I replace the water pump in a 96 Oldsmobile Aurora?

the water pump is driven by a small belt at the back of the front cylinder head.  the pump needs to be removed with a special socket. From what i recall the pump has tabs on it that lock into the housing & i think its reverse thread / turn right to remove the pump instead of left
