Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

My battery light came on a the volt meter read 9 while running and then about ten to fifteen minutes later it will go back to normal, i had my altenator tested and it was good but my battery test showed that it was overcharged.

Renew alternator ,the brushes/commutator are worn giving intermittant charging

2.2 motor. Where is the fuse link for the charging system located?


the fuse is ok as you have a reading on the gauge
the problem is in the alternator or regulator or battery
charge lights work from a positive and a negative current flow
when you turn the key on the current flows in one direction through the light to the alternator and so it lights up
when the engine is running the alternator is charging ( normally at a higher voltage than the battery and so a current is directed back through the light to the battery
these two opposing currents mean that there is no current flow through the light and so it goes out
however if the batter has failed ( 9 volts is a good indication ) then the 14.5 volts will will produce a current back through the bulb and it will again light up
I would have the battery load tested as it may have an internal fault and not accept the charge from the alternator

How do I test engine computer control for 1993 dodge intrepid 3.3L 40 pin to check diodes. like to see a chart or diagram.


This type of parasitic draw can be tricky to find.Hopefully this will help you. I am a master tech and the electronics specialist where I work.This is how i would approach this problem.
Turn the car and ignition off.put your meter on current setting 10amps DC..and .put it in SERIES with negative ground cable. polarity of the meter leads does not really matter like with measuring voltage.The meter should read about 200ma of current with the car shut off.,once the interior lights go out...before that it will show a couple amps..Then leave the meter hooked up and about 20 minutes later,the body control module puts the car in "sleep" mode and current should be around 2ma.. (.002amps) This is normal PCM current drain. If the current is higher than this,pull fuses out one at a time until the drain goes away.this is the problem damaged circuit. Most meters have an auto shutoff function for the display to save battery life. if the meter shuts off before the 20 minutes is up,,just turn it back on ,DO NOT disconnect the meter as the 20 minutes will have to start over.
Testing diodes is simple. with the meter on diode check,there should be a .7 volt drop one way and infinite the other.
A shorted diode will read 0 volt drop in both direction because it is shorted.
An open diode will read open in both directions.

Battery drains while sitting


Hi Anonymous, perform the following tests:
1. Fill acid type batteries to proper levels.
2. Charge battery overnight at 1-2 amps you need 12.5 volts or better after charging.
3. Hook up battery positive cable, then with your multimeter on the milliamp scale connect one lead to the negative battery post and the other lead to the ground cable. Meter should read 3 milliamps or less, 10 milliamps with a radio, 15 milliamps with radio and CB. If your meter reads higher you need to isolate the circuit by pulling fuses and circuit breakers one at a time and observe meter for drop in aprerage then get out your test light and track down the short in that circuit.
3. Make sure all connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at "BOTH" ends.
4. Hook up volt meter to battery and start engine, if meter falls below 9.5 v while cranking replace battery.
5. With engine running at 3600 RPM battery should read 14.3-14.7 volts if not continue tests.
6. Unplug voltage regulator from alternator at crankcase by front of primary cover.

8. With ohm meter, one lead grounded, touch alternator pin meter should read infinity, if not replace stator.
9. With ohm meter, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 ohms on 1989 and later models. 0.2 to 0.4 ohms 1988 and earlier models, if not replace stator.
10. With volt meter set on AC scale, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read
16 to 20 volts AC for every 1000 RPM'S 1989 and later and 19 to 26 volts AC for every 1000 RPMS. If not replace rotor.

2002 mercury montaineer , battery light comes on , they gages shut down couple minutes after then the truck acts like it gonna shut off....when getting a jump, the truck fires right up, couple minutes...


Your battery is definitely low. First clean the terminals on the battery and the inside of the terminal rings on the wires. If you have a slow charger put it on that overnight and see if it holds a charge. If it still keeps depleting or doesn't charge overnight then either your battery or your alternator are done....possibly both. So take the battery to have it load tested. Most places that sell them can test them. If the battery is done replace it then test the battery with a volt meter. If the old battery is still good put it back in the vehicle and test the voltage with a volt meter. With the engine off the voltage should read 12 volts (once its fully charged or if its new) with the engine running it should read around 14 volts. If it is way higher than that or it doesn't go up at all your alternator requires replacing. Alternators are fairly easy to replace but if you don't feel comfortable with that take it in to a mechanic.

93 Buick LeSabre. Battery not charging


use a volt meter while the car is running to check the main wire or large red wire coming off the back of the alternator it should read a steady 14 volts, the volt meter must be set at dc 10 amp settings, ground the black wire to ground or a metal surface some where on the car and touch the red probe wire on the volt meter to the main terminal of the alternator as i said it should read a constant 14 volts if it doesn't the alternator is bad.

My 2003 chevy tahoe, died while i was driving home. when i tried to start it, nothing happens. it doesnt try to crank or turn over, nothing happens, now my ABS and battery light is on.


OK if only 4 months old, charge it with an external battery charger. Once vehicle is running the quick and still most valid test I make is:
Running, with no accessories on, charge volts on volt meter (not dash gauge) should read between 12.9 &14volts. Turn all accessories and headlights on high beam. Volts should not read below 12.5v at idle and should not creep lower after running at any time, even after ten or fifteen minutes. If voltaqge is not as specified alternator has failed and needs replacement.

24 volt charging problems .2 12 volt batteries 1 battery 16volts and the other about 9-10 volts


A 12 volt battery is actually 13.2 volts fully charged. If you are reading 16 volts, you are probably getting extranious voltage from the system somewhere, especially if the vehicle is running when you check the voltage. The alternator will put out about 15-18 volts to charge the battery normally, and yours may put out 28-32 volts to charge them in series, but the batteries, when disconnected, should never read more than about 13.2 volts each. Typically, it will read about 12 1/2 volts when disconnected. COMPLETELY DISCONNECT BOTH OF THE BATTERIES. If you still read 16 volts when it is disconnected, you must have a bad meter because the battery can't produce that much voltage, no matter what. (Six 2.2 volt cells connected in series inside the case.) Put the meter on a known good battery on another car that is not running and see if you get the same reading. It sounds like the other battery is almost dead, regardless, and it sounds like your series/parallel switch may be malfunctioning. (That is the switch that puts the battery in series to run the 24 volt starter, then puts the batteries in parallel to run the remainder of the vehicle on 12 volts. This is all assuming that you have a diesel vehicle with a 24 volt starter and that is why you have two batteries.
