Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

My car was running fine and all of a sudden the car would not accelerate in any gear. It's a standard and i smelled the strong smell of clutch burning but it feels like theres nothing wrong with the clutch it just won't go. It moves a little bit like its tryin to go but just seems like it just not engageing, and when i looked underneath there was what looked like a piece of a shredded brakepad was coming out of the hole at the bottom of the transmission.

Ouch, yes your suspicions are correct, the clutches have burnt out in the transmission, Not happy news I'm sorry, cheapest alternative here is to shoot down to the dismantlers and pick up a 2nd hand one, ask them about warranty, you may be lucky and the dismantler may be able to install it for you, about a 5 hour job. Hope this info guides you, Good luck

Gears arent going and no acceleration and burning smell

You need to have a look at your clutch. The burning smell is the clutch slipping.

Car running rough at random when accelerating and also idle drops suddenly when slowing down and often completely stalls out when I stop. Smells strongly of gasoline when it stalls/almost stalls but I

This could be a lot of things. one of the tests that you need to run is shift it into nuetral when you are stopping and see if it still drops RPM and wants to stall. This will eliminate or conclude that it is a transmission issue. If it is still doing this then it could be a vacuum leak or fuel delivery issue.

Revs of the car go up but the speed doesn't increase at all,

The most obvious cause to this fault would be the clutch slipping then suddenly gripping and away it goes. Now are there any cluncking noises or is there any strong smell when this fault occurs. If there is a strong smell the chances are you will require a new clutch. If there is no smell it could be clutch release bearing, either way gearbox will have to come out.If there is any loud clunking noise, possible drive shaft, but this is unlikely. the problem needs to be diagnosed by a mechanic.Always ask for quotes 1st,If a clutch is required be prepaired for possible damaged flywheel.

Can't change gear and very bad smell on 1988 mitsubishi mirage

The sounds like the cluch went bad. the smell and the reason you cant shift gears is due to the clutch. the clutch is burning and thats the smell, when the clutch gets low and slips it smells and sometimes it just blows apart due to wear. have the clutch checked and you will find it needs replacing. hope this is helpful have a good day.

So a 1994 mazda mx3 with a manual tranmission. When you hit the accelerator when the car is in gear the car will rev but not actually move. We can push the car without an issue so not a brake locked up...

Colybear18,
All the indications you stated above give a clear indication that the clutches are worn completely. What is required is that you get the gear box serviced - changing the clutch disc will make the diffence you are looking for. The burnt smell you noticed was the complete failure of the clutch plate. Hope this helps.... Do have a good day.
