Question about 1998 Honda Accord

1 Answer

I have a 1998 accord 4 cylinder, I haven't changed the transmission (since new/I drive vy ez) and it now has 173 k miles; Tranny shifts fine, all gears, no prob there BUT I've noticed that when the car warms up the tranny starts acting up, say, I come to a stop sign and 2 seconds later I notice like a soft push (tranny being late to down shift from hi gears). I talk to a mechanic and says it is the tranny filter but that it is inside tha tranny and its a major work to be done...and he says it costs as rebuilding the tranny, say, 1,000 dllrs,...IS THAT SO? This happens after the car is warmed up or 15 minutes of being on the road so I was thinking of perhaps installing a Uhaul tranny coolant system (radiator for the tranny) WHAT SHOULD I DO to avoid such a jigh cost of repairing when it shifts all gears? Tnx!

Take it to another shop and here what they say. They should perform a series of test then come to a conclusion.

Try dropping the tranny fluid and changing the tranny filter and filling with fresh fluid. Sounds like the tranny is sleeping between shifts.

if you are not familiar with transmissions dont try it it is quite difficult it may not even be the tranny going bad it may be the shift sensor if your check engine light is on go by a check engine tool at autozone for 25.00 and check the code se what is says if it is the tranny sensor it should come op and that will be alot cheaper but if you do replace i would go new cant beat new rebuilt tranniesare not guarenteed when installed by owner anyway hope that helps

1998 Honda Accord transmission problem

This transmission have shift solenoids that are mounted on the outside in my personal experience I have rectified shift problem with these transmissions by simply change a solenoid or two. My recommendation is to put this vehicle on a code scanner and find out what is at fault first. If its a solenoid just replace, they are a dealer only part and that should take care of your problem. Good Luck and thanks for using FIX YA

Yes it does matter. Remember your filter is a screen that the oil flows over. If it is clogged it will not allow clean oil past it and to some extent will be like you are low on oil or high if the oil can not flow.
Change the filter and look for metal deposits in both the fluid and the filter. Minute shavings like sand or smaller is normal as long as there is not a lot. If you see a lot or see big particles then gears have been ground and you are looking at trouble. Get fixed early. Otherwise if filter is clean and fluid is fine and tranny still does this they make additives for tranny's to help with slipping. I use tranny medic. Follow the directions as you will need to drain some of the fluid out. Also do not add to your tranny unless you have met or exceeded the mileage specs on the bottle of the tranny medic. Hope this helped.

possibly due to low trans fluid pressure. the cooler in the radiator may be plugged. to check, disconnect and bypass cooler with rubber line & clamps. drive 2-3 miles. shifting OK now? install auxillary cooler to bypass one in radiator. you can get one at auto-zone $30-$50. may just need fluid & filter change, but more likely it's the cooler. when they get plugged, either one, pressure drops alot.
