How do you remove the alt after it is unbolted from the mount

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Wiper system module cover Fuel injector sight shield
  3. Rotate the engine forward.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE Do not disconnect the power steering pipes from the pump


    Alternator terminal nut, lead and electrical connector Serpentine belt Front bolts and two rear bolts Alternator from the bracket Serpentine belt tensioner Bracket Power steering pipes from the retainer Fuel pressure test port cap from the injector rail


    Power steering pump and reposition it to gain access to the alternator Alternator

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator Power steering pump. Torque the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). Fuel pressure test port cap to the fuel rail Power steering pipes to the retainer. Torque the fastener to 54 inch lbs. (6 Nm). Alternator bracket. Torque the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Serpentine belt tensioner Alternator to the bracket. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Serpentine belt Alternator electrical connector, lead and nut. Torque the nut to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
  2. Rotate the engine to its original position.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel injector sight shield. Torque the nut to 54 inch lbs. (6 Nm). Wiper system module cover Negative battery cable
  4. Perform a charging system test and verify the proper operation of the system.

Drive Belt Replacement


Removal Procedure

Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .

Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .

Remove the engine mount strut bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement - Right Side .

Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .

Remove the engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side .

Remove the right side engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement - Right Side .

Lower the vehicle.


Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise to release the drive belt tension.

Slide the drive belt off of the belt idler pulley (1).

Slowly release the drive belt tensioner.

Remove the drive belt from the accessory drive pulleys.

The easiest way to do it is to remove the coil pack and the alternator.That will provide plenty of access to the rear 3 plugs.With the alt out of the way you can reach through where it was mounted same with the coil pack.Don't just remove the coils unbolt the mounting bracket and remove all 3 coils together.

unbolt mount from transmission while supporting with jack. Jack up slightly. Unbolt old mount from cross member. Replace in reverse order, do final tightening with jack removed. A few vehicles require the cross member to be removed from frame to access the lower bolts/nuts.

How do i change the alternater myself


A good Bible to pick at any auto parts store call" Haynes auto repair", great book and investment if you plan to continue to do any repair work on your own in the near future plus it come with a picture. you will need to jack car up and remove a splash shield to remove the lower bolt, then remove Alt. 2.0L engines (coupe) need the coolant reservoir removed for wiggle room. 2.0L wagons and sedans, you need to free the Oxygen Sensor wiring harness from it's retainer on mounting bracket and unbolt power steering and A/C hose brackets from top of Alt. bracket, then remove mounting bolts. 1: Disconnect negative terminal on battery-this is a rule or you'll suffer a blown diode in the alt. when you plug one of the wires back in. 2: Put a 3/8" breaker bar or ratchet into the square hole on the tension-er and pull to front of car to loosen and remove belt or shove out of way then ease it back. 3: Remove the a/c hose bracket from the top of Alt. bracket. Tip: You may need to also unbolt the a/c hoses from the strut tower to wiggle them around for more room. 4: disconnect the electrical wires from the Alt. Two use those stupid little snap connectors, use a small screw diver and carefully ease them off. The main one uses a small nut, that's another reason to disconnect the battery since that's a positive connection! 5: (Very Important) Unbolt the Power Steering reservoir and try to shove it aside a few inches. 6: Loosen, then remove the top and bottom mounting bolts. The bottom fastener has a sliding nut built into the Alt. bracket. You may want something handy to pry the Alt. up and out. 7: If your lucky then you can grab the A/C hoses with your right hand and ease them aside as you use your left hand on the pulley to lift the Alt. If not, your gonna be swearing a lot 8: Now you can re-install everything in reverse order or any order you want, just connect the battery terminal last.

My ford escape is a 2002, but I am trying to replace the alternator, but can't seem to get it out. Even though I have removed everything that is obviously in the way. What am I suppose to remove it???...


assuming you have a 3.0 engine.....raise the vehicle, remove inner splash shield,RT axle shaft, alt bracket and TWIST to remove alternator.....no fun hope this helped...GL

You unbolt the alternator. Unclip the fans from the rad. Let the fans drop down without unbolting anything. Pull the alt out from the top. Its that easy.... Install is opposite.

Is it a single cam or 24 valve? The single cam is as simple as removing the belt, unplugging and unbolting the alt. and pulling it out. The 24 valve on the other hand is difficult. It has to come out through the wheel well and in order to do this you have to remove the crankshaft pulley, which requires a special tool to hold the flywheel. I also like the explosives method. There are alot of cars I would like to use that tecnique on. Also there is a belt tensioner. It's the pulley mounted on an arm. You'll need a 1/2" breaker bar or a belt tool to pull it and relieve the tension. Place the head of the breaker in the hole on the tensioner and pull it away from the belt. If your's is a 12 valve, this may be the most difficult part of the repair.
