Fuel pump wont shut off

Read page 19 of your owners manual. It's supposed to run about 5 hours after the car is shut off. I heard the same noise and googled it and found a response in one of the blogs. It's supposed to be an "Evaporation Leakage Check"?? To me, this seems to be something Toyota added to cover up a problem they found in their fuel system. Once you turn the key on and off, it will shut off, but likely will come on in another 5 hours.

Engine turns over strongly giving the impression it wants to go but just wont fire up. 1981 2000cc cortina

I would check the distributor cap and rotor, if any evidence of even slight corrosion
exists, this would give the exact symptoms you describe. Replace cap and rotor
and (I generally do the wires and clean the plugs as well). If this is all well and still
the problem exists then check the timing on the engine as the timing gear may have
slipped. Cylinder 1 should be at the top of the stroke when you manually rotate
the engine until the timing marks on the crank and timing chain cover align.
You can check this with a pencil or a stick to see where the highest point is after
rotating the crank if you do not have a timing light. Cylinder one is the closest
to the front of the vehicle. Use a socket and extension bar to manually rotate the
engine (in the direction it normally operates only). If ok then I would
have the ignition module tested at the parts jobber. Hope this helps.

How do I replace a fuel pump on a 2003 escape? Engine not getting enough fuel so when starting car, I get crank but cannot get engine to turn over. Perhaps the pump can wait if someone has other...

Check to see if the inertia switch is tripped first. Read your owner manual for location and how to reset. Just push the button. It usually only trips in an accident to shut off the fule pump in case there is a leak.

here is how to replace the pump. It's good because you don't have to drop the tank!
  1. Relieve the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 . (I disconnect inertia switch and crank engine for 10 seconds to revilve pressure).
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. (I don't do this myself). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
  1. Lift the LH rear seat cushion.
  1. Position the carpet aside.
  1. Remove the screws and the fuel pump module access cover.
  1. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  1. Disconnect the fuel and vapor lines from the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .
  1. s3k~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif WARNING: The fuel tank may be pressurized. Remove the fuel tank filler cap slowly. If a hissing sound is heard, wait until the condition stops before removing the fuel tank filler cap. If these precautions are not followed, fuel may spray and cause personal injury.
    Remove the gas cap.
  1. Using the special tool, remove the fuel pump module. (If you don't have tool, use a chisel or screwdriver and tap counterclockwise to rotate the ring).

  1. NOTE: Install a new fuel pump mounting gasket.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Start the engine and visually inspect for leaks.

Car will not start

The first check you make should be the fuel pump - normally when you turn the car to 'on', you can hear it run for a few seconds. There should also be a small capped valve almost like a tire valve in the fuel rail at the engine - the cap can be removed and the valve pushed (carefully!) to check for fuel pressure. fuel should spurt out of this valve - holding a rag over it is advisable. If there's no fuel, and no sound of the pump running, then check in your owners manual for fuses/relays relating to the fuel pump and check them. If you're satisfied the engine is getting fuel, then please comment, and we can go into ignition problems. Otherwise, you're looking at a new pump.

Thanks for using Fixya, and please rate if this helps :)

I got a difffernt injector pump and now my truck won't run

I am hoping this truck is a gas engine. If so probably a 460. The truck has a fuel pump in the fuel tank or tanks if so equipped. There is a fuel rail at the front of the engine that feeds the injectors. On this fuel rail you will see a plastic cap that looks like a cap on a valve stem to a tire wheel combo. Remove this cap, if you turn the key to the on position you should have air out at first and then fuel. Be very careful not to ignite the fuel coming out. Use something to catch the fuel as it begins to come out.

No fuel to carberator

Has anyone checked to see if the fuel pump was receiving any supply voltage?
Old or new pump?

I would also check to see if it is fused on a shared circuit with anything else and check that fuse.

I'd recommend investing in a manual for your car so you can do a little research before spending money on things not defective.
Haynes or Chilton will have a manual for your car.

Fuel pump

moz-screenshot.jpgThe fuel pump is in the fuel tank.
1) Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery
Remove the fuel filler cap.
2) Relieve the fuel pressure by using a box end wrench on the 6mm service bolt at the fuel rail (on motor) while holding the special banjo bolt with another wrench.
Place a rag over the 6mm service bolt and slowly loosen the bolt one complete turn to release the fuel line pressure.
3) Remove the fuel tank.
Remove the drain bolt and drain the fuel from the tank.
Disconnect the 3P connector in the trunk
Remove the two-way valve cover and the fuel hose protector
Disconnect the hoses.
While supporting the tank, remove the strap bolts and the fuel tank should be free.
4) Disconnect fuel lines and connector from the fuel pump
Remove the fuel pump mounting nuts
5) When installing, torque fuel pump mounting nuts to 4 lb-ft (6 Nm). Torque fuel line bolt to 20 lb-ft (28Nm)
