Question about 1996 GMC Jimmy
You may truely have an over voltage situation causing your other gauges to read improperly. I would confirm the charging system is in proper opperating condition. If its ok you may have a bad ground some where. The best thing I can suggest is to go to a reputable shop and let them find the fault.
