Question about 1997 GMC Sierra

I have a 97 gmc sierra 5.7 vortec with 185000km. when the weather is damp i have been noticing that i have trouble starting the truck. i recently tried starting it but no luck, its trying to crank over but it seem like it could be a spark problem any suggestions please Lou from Canada

Dist cap and wires located at rear of engine directly beneath the cowl panel. chk to make sure your seal that prevents water from draining from windshield to engine compartment is in place

Hi, i swapped a 97 4.3 vortec to 98 5.7 vortec in the 97. The problem i"m having is the fuel pump is running for about 15 to 20 sec, and when i start it, it starts and then shuts off in the on...


You could take ou the fuel pump relay and replace it with another one just like it from the fuse box under the hood. That will let you know if the relay is bad.

Trouble starting in wet weather


replace the plug wires.They are the old carbon type fitted, and are a common fault in the damp weather

Having problems starting a 97 GMC Sierra


It almost sounds to me like a timing issue. Did you get it timed properly after the distributer was installed? Another thing is the timing chain. Aim a timing light at the crank marks and see if they are staying in the same place, or jumping around. If they are jumping your timing chain may have jumped, or be badly worn, and will need to be replaced.

sound like the timming is off i would check it first then have the starter checked that might be your noise
