I get about 19 city and 27 highway, rated at 22-33. I have the 2.4 ecotec engine and there is poor acceleration, like it falls on its face and the trans (6 speed)doesnt downshift , there is a lag. i returned to dealer and was told the engine performs as described by the manufacturer. I asked them to flash the PCM, i marked it, and it was untouched after i was told no updates available. The car was brought in from another state, and i thought maybe the PCM needed to be adjusted to a lower sea level? I drove another malibu with the same engine, but a few years older(2005) and the car ran like a beast compared to what i have.
Any ideas??? What to do?? thanks...

Your numbers aren't that far off...the mpg posted is established using professional drivers...I could likely coax a few more mpg out of your car if I drove it because I know how. Generally, today's new engines do not need any "break in" so it should have adequate power right out of the box! There may not be any updates for the computer, but the map sensor should be able to compensate for altitude changes. Using a synthetic oil can help a bit as well.
I'd try and find out if there were any optional transmission or final drive gear options offered for different localities. That may affect both mpg and performance. As for shifting, (as well as everything else you mentioned, I'd definitely contact factory customer service if you aren't getting anywhere with your dealer) The car didn't cost $5.00, and therefore I would take it to the "next level" if you aren't happy with it!!

I have a 2000 Chevy impala with 131,500 miles on it. For some reason it's using more gas then normal. I had a new fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator put on it and still same thing. Can't see...

catalytic converter, egr valve, oxygen sensors. If you have that many miles on it, try loosening the exhaust before the cat converter and try driving it. If your power has come back, then it has failed internally.

How often do I change the oil

Every 3 -5 k miles. Regular every day driving. Towing, dirty conditions etc about a third less than that. Some new motor oils offer extended mileage, you can read those for more info. But remember, the longer you keep the oil in the vehicle the more depsoits from burning fuel is churning around in your engine.

1999 buick century 85,000 miles Getting poor fuel economy using 87 octane. keep tires inflated properly new air filter changed spark plugs(not wires) and 1 of the o2 sensors Mechanic said only 1 sensor...

When you do a tune up you should replace the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, airfilter, and fuel filter, this will insure that you get the best mileage. Also have the coil checked, for proper resistance. If it starts to get weak it will throw a lower than normal voltage spark. You can not look at spark plug wires and tell if they are good, this can only be done with an ohm meter. The resistance should be 3000 to 6000 ohms per foot of wire. One other note is if your car feels sluggish or lacks power is to check the catalitic converter. These clog up and stop air flow thru the engine. There are many many things on cars that will result in poor gas mileage. A good mechanic doesn't go by just the codes a car spits out, they have to read the numbers and diagnose what is wrong.

Lost gas mileage please

Lost gas mileage. I would have to assume that you are not getting the require mile per gallon. For example If the car book say 32 miles per gallon. You are getting about 20 to 25 miles per gallon.
If you want to improve the your gas mileage then you have to do the required maintenance
Oil change every 3000 mile
tune up as required
Air filter
If the wiring spark plug wire is old and crack then it need to be replace.
If you park out side and the batteries is about 5 years old have it check
If you buy the car new, you will have a car book follow the maintenance routine.
If you have done all the maintenance and the gas mileage is low than recommended then take it to a shop to figure out if some thing is wrong or not preforming as it should.
I do hope this help you.
