Now you have to be sure if you have the right model as from 1997 onwards obd 2 was implemented and previously they were using obd 1. So check that.Hope this helps.

I would first check for error codes using an OBD-II scanner tool- then research the Diagnostic Troubleshoot Code(s) to point you in the direction of the problem. Most common error is when DIYers read the scanner tool and automatically assume scanner codes pulled will pinpoint the exact problem. Scanner tools vary in scope. The bottom line, use the tool as a starting reference point, but you will have to test the component to make sure it is the one that is malfunctioning. You can read more about OBD-II codes at the following URLs:

Where would you find out how to read the codes for my 97 Acura 2.2:'?

Hello again Alisa A Floyd,

Your OBD (on-board diagnostic) port is pictured in
the URL (bing LINK) BELOW...

It is centered in the center console as it curves up into the dash.

Check out local parts houses (AUTOZONE) loan tools ...
and some mechanics & muffler shops will provide "reads"
for FREE... (just be aware they REALLY WANT to SELL you anything/everything).

An excellent place to check out readers... (a whole science ... area of study) and SUPPORTING LITERATURE is on AMAZON.

Just be advised... really cheap units are being plugged into your really nice ECM...

1997 was right at the beginning of STANDIZATION... It would be a real pity to CAUSE more trouble... Than to use a reputable interface ... (read the customer feedback... look at medium priced units...
($50 - $95+++ price range... Even Bluetooth...
(on my CARS I ALSO need to reset SERVICE indicators...
(read & learn))).

Hope this helps.

Electrical issue.

Access ECM on the data link connector . Turn ignition switch on(do not start). Turn diagnostic mode selector on ECM fully clockwise. Wait at least 2 seconds. Turn diagnostic mode selector on ECM fully counter clockwise . Self diagnosis in mode 2 Mil should flash. If the scan tool record s codes or the mil light will flash the codes

How do I find or get Error Codes for a 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 3.1L?, is it by turning my key in the ignition?, on the dash?? Tazz-Man

On all GM cars you will need a OBD2 code reader, this hooks up to a diagnostic port under the dash in front of the driver. This is the only method to read codes. Kragen and Autozone will scan the system for free, other parts stores offer this service as well.

Where is the diagnostic port located on my 2001 passat 5 sp. auto V6?

On the old Volkswagen Passat B5 (MY 1997-2001) the Data Link Connector (DLC) or diagnostic port is placed on the right side of the parking brake lever, under a small rectangle rubber cover. See pictures below:

On the new Volkswagen Passat B5 (after MY 2001) the Data Link Connector (DLC) or diagnostic port is placed on the panel above pedals. See pictures below:

Just bought a used Sunfire. Check engine light

I have never had to replace an ALDL plug in 28 years. This includes 4 years working for a GM dealership.

Check your manual for a fuse location for the diagnostic link. Also try the generic vehicle data stream on the scanner. Is this a good scanner like a snap-on or genesis? If it a cheap one, suspect that.

Try going to an Advance or Auto=zone store and have them try to scan it.

Hope this helps

How do you check transmition fluid on 2006 4 liter v6 ford mustang. is there a dip stick

peterc759: Unfortunately, this is a procedure you are not going to be able to do your self. There are not even that many shops out side of the dealers who can do it properly without the proper special tools.
The car must be hooked up to a diagnostic monitor which can read the transmission fluid temperature. Most shops who are up to date probably own the scanner which will plug into the diagnostic port and read that information. BUT, from there the car must be put on a lift or raised up high enough and kept level, to access the transmission filler and drain plug. There is a special tool which is inserted in the transmission through the filler plug "while the engine is running and the transmission fluid has reached a certain temperature. At that point the tool is inserted to take the fluid level reading.
I hope I have answered your question even if it is not the answer you would like to have heard.
