This is a common issue with ford explorers/ mercury mountaineers. Best thing is to replace the stereo head unit.

Unfortunately that is an LCD light controlled unit. It will need replacing.

The bulb for this is replaceable, but the radio must be pulled out and the top cover of the radio case removed, the bulb is a tiny little peanut bulb, they are available at a full service parts store, just bring the old one with u.

just unplug the battery for about ten minutes to reset it. make sure you have the code for the radio if it needs one.
