Question about 2005 Dodge Magnum

2 Answers

2005 Dodge Magnum STX is stuck in park. Brake lights work, I can feel shift knob loosen but not disengage from park. Do you think it might be part of "the cup plug that retains the park pawl anchor shaft" recall-ID#56642?

The BTSI (Brake Transmission Shift Interlock) has a small spring retainer on the park safety. A small plastic tab breaks & releases the spring. This requires the shifter to be disassembled in order to be repaired (unless yours is under warranty).

Repaired mine Sunday May 1st and can provide detailed instructions if desired.

If you are lucky, your brake interlock is the only problem. There is a bypass switch located beside the gear selector. Remove the small "cubby" bin located next to the gear shift by simply lifting up to remove. You will note a small access port and a pink button contained therein. Press the pink button to override the brake interlock.

If you still cannot shift into park, then the shifter must be removed for the spring repair. Even if yours is still under warranty, you will get another shifter that will eventually fail due to poor engineering.

Please let me know if you would like my assistance.

I do believe that this is your problem. The plug or anchor could be bad. Also there is the switch from brake medal to shifter that goes bad.

Check and make sure the brake lights work. This assumes you mean stuck in park position. You can override this, refer to the owners manual, you know that book that came with the car that no one reads.

I have a 2005 dodge magnum sxt that will not shift from park.it's lock in the park position.how do I fix this problem.

If this vehicle was equiped with the brake safety system, you have to have the brake depressed to change gears, then you will need to start by looking to see if somehow the brake sensor came loose. I assume this has a console shifter, remove enough of the console that you can visually see if the actuator is actually moving up when you pull the shift release in to move the shifter. If this is working and there is nothing under the vehicle in teh way of the shifting arm the transmission needs to be serviced.

Why is my gear shift will not move out of park?

There is a electric solenoid that releases the gear shift only when the brake pedal is pressed, check your brake lights, are they working? if the brake lights are working then the solenoid may be stuck or otherwise inop, it can be manually over ridden, check the owners manual, it may tell you how to do this.
