Question about 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora

1 Answer

On my oldsmobile aurora, I have a problem turning left. It's as if my power steering pump doesn't work when I try to turn left. I replaced the pump and the left cv axle because it was bad, but still having some issues. Help?

How difficult is it to replace it? Would I need to replace both sides or just one? And it sounds as if it whines somewhere on the left side up by the tire. What would that be?

About how many hours would you say it takes? I'm a high school student studying to be a mechanic. But my car won't pass inspection due to the steering. My instructor will help but I need an estimate on how long it will take.

More than likely your rack and pinion has gone bad. If the pump was bad it wouldn't work to either side. But the rack and pinion can go bad on just one side

The rack and pinion on those cars is kind of a hard job. The best I remember, you have to drop part of the engine cradle to get to it. You only have one rack and pinion. That is what actually moves your wheels back and forth when you move the steering wheel. And the whining noise you hear is probably also the rack and pinion

It could be a collapsed pressure hose. If the car has speed sensor power steering it could be a problem with that system.

I was looking at a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora Sedan but the guy says when he turns on the car that the power steering makes noise at first then stops "not a big deal" could this be a big deal? What...

It could be a "big deal" or it could be relatively minor. Since you can't be sure before you buy make sure you offer low enough to pay for a power steering pump replacement - $400-$650 at the dealer. And the pump itself sells for $80- $272 if you replace it yourself - it is not that hard either.

I have a 2003 aurora and everytime i turn to the left i feel on the stirring wheel like is grinding can you tell me what the problem is !

Could be the steering rack. I would check the power steering fluid level first. Second, I would look to see that the pulley on the power steering pump is moving properly - I have had cases where the pulley loosens from the hub where it is mounted to the pump. Finally, you could have a bad pump itself.

I have a 1997 oldsmobile aurora and the problem is when im going slow or at a complete stop the wheel is very hard to turn to the right but it has no problem whennim driving and never gives me a hard time...

The rack and pinion needs to be replaced to rectify the one side turning easily and the other side not turning so easily. It's like a flapper in the rack and pinion, I think.

There must be enough pressure built up by the power steering pump if it goes easily at a stop when one turns left.

Possible power steering pump

If you have noise, remove the serpentine belt and spin the pulleys to see which is making noise, has play, etc. I thought my power steering pump was bad, turned out to be the AC Clutch Bearing. Fairly easy to replace.

97 aurora AC not working

GM products have a safety feature which shuts down compressors is they run too low on refrigerant. Honestly surprised you were able to fill the system with refrigerant since the compressor would have shut off. The best way to reset the compressor is to disconnect the negative battery cable for 15 min. After reconnecting, the compressor should function again assuming there's enough R-134A in it. If there's not, turn the AC to MAX and add the refrigerant. At this point, the system should actually **** the can dry. Hope this helps with your AC problem. All the best!

Steering problem

If you can turn fine one direction and not the other then the pump most likley is not the problem. I would lean more towards the rack and pinion. The pump only supplys pressure, the rack has controls for direction.

Power steering pump and belt replacement on 1997 olds aurora

More than likely it's the A/C compressor clutch is going bad. Cut the old serpentine belt off and install a shorter belt to bypass the A/C compressor for now.
