Question about 2005 Audi A4

Code P0118 on Audi A4 - Related to Ignition Coil Problem?

Got code P0118 indicating engine coolant temp circuit high input. Also have recall by Audi for ignition coils. Can the two be related? I am not sure which is causing my check engine light to come on. Car is 2005 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro.

Temp gauge goes to 12 o'clock position and does not hesitate up and down.

Thanks!

I have had the car for 2 years and no problems with it but I know it wasn't leak fuel or oil or I would have notice because I always wiped down the engine after checking coolant or oil levels I have looked up recalls there was a list of them but nothin I could really relate to a fire if anybody knows something I don't I would appreciate your advice thanks

Hi, the sensor on the engine (right at the rear end of the cylinder head) has two separate outputs. One drives the temperature gauge and the other provides data for the engine control unit. The output for the engine control unit is almost certainly faulty and the sensor will need to be replaced. It isn't an expensive item and's not time consuming to replace (1/2 hr) - so you could ask Audi to do it for you when they replace the ignition coils.
Hope that helps Matt..

What can cause trouble code p0118 engine coolant temp sensor ( high voltage input ) 99 intrepid 2.7 v6

The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is a variable resistor, that measures the temperature of the engine coolant. The ECT sensor has a signal circuit and a low reference circuit. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the ECT signal circuit and a ground for the ECT low reference circuit. When the ECT is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the ECT increases, the sensor resistance decreases. With high sensor resistance, the ECM detects a high voltage on the ECT signal circuit. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the ECT signal circuit. If the ECM detects an excessively high ECT signal voltage, which is a low temperature indication, DTC P0118 sets. You have A bad coolant temp sensor or a wiring problem !

89 dodge ram truck 2500 2wd code reader says 4 codes dont know what they mean p1509, p1298, p0118 andp0113

P1509 Dodge - Leak Detection Pump Switch or Mechanical Fault

P1298 Dodge - Air/Fuel Ratio Lean Under Wide Open Throttle Condition
- Plugged air filter
- Plugged fuel filter
- Defective fuel pump
- Ignition system weak-misfires
- Defective coil

P0118 Dodge - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit High
- Low engine coolant level
- Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
- Faulty engine coolant thermostat
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness is open or shorted
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical circuit poor connection

P0113 Dodge - Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High
- Faulty Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor
- Dirty air filter
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor harness is open or shorted
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor circuit poor electrical connection

Engine runs rough if it warms up won't start dtc codes p0118 and p0113 just did head gasket and replaced exhaust manifold all new gaskets new plugs wires and coolant engine timing marks are all c

P0113 Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input

Low temperature results in a high signal voltage. When the PCM sees a signal voltage higher than 5 volts, it sets this P0113 check engine light code.

P0118 - The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor screwed into a coolant passage in the cylinder head. Sensor resistance is high when coolant temperature is low and resistance drops when coolant temperature increases. The powertrain control module (PCM) provides a 5 volt reference and a ground to the sensor. The PCM monitors voltage drop to determine coolant temperature. If the ECT reads less than freezing temp. when engine has been running for more than a few minutes, the PCM determines a circuit fault and sets this code. Or if the PCM determines the sensor resistance is out of specs, this code is set.
Potential Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0118 could include:

  • Very poor fuel economyicon1.png
  • A no start condition
  • Vehicle may start, but run very poorly, blowing black smoke, running very rough and misfiring
  • Illumination of MIL
Causes

A code P0118 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • A bad connection at the sensor
  • An open in the ground circuit between the ECT sensor and the PCM
  • A short in the voltage feed between the sensor and the PCM
  • A bad PCM (less likely)
  • A bad temperature sensor (shorted internally)

Check engine code p0118

hi 8, that is Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input, it may caused by bad connection at the sensor, open in the ground circuit between the ECT sensor and the PCM, short in the voltage feed between the sensor and the PCM, etc.
you can check code statement here: Diagnostic Trouble Code Table

I have a 98 cevy astro that i replaced the engine coolant temp sensor and i cleared the code after i started the van and ran it for a bit the code (p0118 engine coolant temp circuit high input ) came back ...

Hello! After you changed the sensor did you also replace the coolant? If so, It is necessary to bleed air from the cooling system or The ECM will set code P0118...If not check the connector wires...Black and Yellow for corrosion and/or broken/loose connections...See resistance to temperature chart...When engine is cold resistance of the CTS is high...when hot resistance is low...This will tell you if the sensor is working properly.............Guru...........Saailer
