Question about Toyota Solara

I have 2000 toyota solara 4cyl. automatic trans,the car shuders badly only when accelerating frome 30mph . is it the worn or damaged cv joint?

CV joints usually make a clicking noise when turning a corner. The transmission may not be shifting down like it should when accelerating--try shifting down manually to see if that corrects the problem. Check the fluid level in the transmission. If ok, you may need to talk to your transmission servicer.

That usually is a worn CV joint. Go to a smooth surface like a parking lot, wind the windows down, and turn slow circles on full lock. If you hear that noise, it is probably the CV joints and not ball joint noise, since you are not going over bumps.
Also look at the CV rubber boots (2 each side) to find any splits in them. Those let grease out and dirt in, and rapidly end the life of a CV joint.

The individual joints can be replaced, but it isn't worth it. If worn out, get a complete re-manufactured front axle each side.

Vibration on right side when accelerating


could be jimmy, if lug nuts are tight, and wheel is balanced, the cv joint may be the culprit, are the boots torn ? if so, all the grease flew out, can you hear grinding when your turnning sharply ? back in the day when cars had drive shafts and the universal joints went bad, same thing, V-I-B-R-A-T-I-O-N ...............................

I believe that what you are experiencing is whats called FAILSAFE MODE, which means its stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear due to recent change in driving habits.... maybe you got on the accelerator a little too rapidly or sharp corner too fast.... All, Nissan's, Toyo's, and most cars have this mode wich is meant to prevent further damage to the trans. This may not be what your experiencing but it sounds like the symptoms, sluggish, slow acceleration,.......
have you experiencs and shifting issues, is it an auto or manual trans? if you have a trans power or over drive button and or light on dash or shifter for automatic, observe when you start it up next time and you may find it blinks 8-10-12 times.... if so you have damaged the trans due to mismatched/mixed tire sizes and or tread depth, and brans or tread styles.... yes it doesn't just ruin 4x4 auto trans,.... it kills any transmission after unknowingly driving around with incorrect tires. I work for Nissan and have for 26 years and i have seen chain tire dealers like Walmart, Sears Roebuck, Midas, Tire Wharehouse, Pepboys, and dozens of others cause the transmission planetary-gear failure; in mostly automatic 4x4 or AWD vehicles when replacing just one two or three tires AND NOT THE COMPLETE SET AS REQUIRED BY EVERY AWD AND 4X4 AUTO MANUFACTURER. DON'T BE A VICTIM... BE A WISE CONSUMER.... AND GET AN ATTORNEY IF YOU BECAME ONE ALREADY....

not enough info for diagnosis, Try putting bar soap and check tension of fanbelts for squeaking noise of the belts as a cause. The clunk maybe worn or damaged suspension components, cv joints or even worn or broken motor mounts. Start with these items...

I think the front-right CV joint may be going out on my 2003 Solara SLE (it makes a funny noise when I turn the car while I am driving, but not from a complete stop). What would be the least expensive...


If it is the CV joint (and it does sound like it is), the least expensive option will be to replace the CV joint. This is really the only solution available, but the popping or funny noises can also indicate other worn parts such as struts, shocks, tire rod ends, and even the rack and pinion in your steering system. I would check all of this before going through the aggravation of replacing the CV joint.

Much of the symptoms you describe sound like a CV joint. I would take it to the dealer and insist that it be fixed... What is bothering me though is under normal operating conditions, CV joints and boots are engineered to last upwards of 150,000 miles. Some go the distance, but a lot reach the end of the road far short of their design life. According to one major aftermarket supplier of replacement axle shafts, CV joint shafts are typically being replaced at anywhere from 70,000 miles to 130,000 miles.

SYMPTOMS OF CV JOINT FAILURE
Bad boots are not the only thing you need to look for. You also need to listen for noise or complaints that might indicate a CV joint problem. These include:

  • Popping or clicking noises when turning. This almost always indicates a worn or damaged outer CV joint. To verify this condition, place the vehicle in reverse, crank the steering wheel to one side and drive the vehicle backwards in a circle (check the rearview mirror first!). If the noise gets louder, it confirms the diagnosis and the need for a new CV joint or replacement shaft assembly.
  • A "clunk" when accelerating, decelerating or when putting the transaxle into drive. The noise comes from excessive play in the inner joint on FWD applications, either inner or outer joints in a RWD independent suspension, or from the driveshaft CV joints or U-joint in a RWD or AWD powertrain. The same kind of noise can also be produced by excessive backlash in differential gears. To verify the condition, back the vehicle up, alternately accelerating and decelerating while in reverse. If the clunk or shudder is more pronounced, it confirms a bad inner joint.
  • A humming or growling noise. Sometimes due to inadequate lubrication in either the inner or outer CV joint, this symptom is more often due to worn or damaged wheel bearings, a bad intermediate shaft bearing on equal length halfshaft transaxles, or due to worn shaft bearings within the transaxle.
  • A shudder or vibration when accelerating. May be caused by play in the inboard or outboard joints, but the most likely cause is a worn inboard plunge joint. Similar vibrations can also be caused by a bad intermediate shaft bearing on transaxles with equal length halfshafts, or by bad motor mounts on FWD vehicles with transverse-mounted engines.
  • A vibration that increases with speed. This symptom is rarely caused by a failing CV joint. An out-of-balance tire or wheel, an out-of-round tire or wheel, or a bent rim are the more likely causes.

sounds more like rotors or hub bearings cv joints make a clicking noise while turning when their going bad
