Thank you. Can i reach those from under the hood or inside and remove engine cover there?

  • bruceralph66 Nov 15, 2009

going outside to try to find said wires now. Thanks.

Could not remove the cover inside. Opened up the hood, unplugged E.C.M. plug (I Think anyway), engine stopped immediately. Accessories and day-time headlights still on ! Took off Neg. battery cable.
Finally, everything shut down and stopped.
Re-hooked everything back up to see if van would restart, and it did first turn of the key. Unhooked harness and Neg. cable to shut down again.
So... Now until I can get a new ignition(I Guess?), I can turn on my vehicle with a key and shut down with pulling harnesses and cables off. (Which will **** if it gets to -20 deg. soon.) The main thing for now is- the car is off. THANK YOU!!!
B.T.W. used to be you had to pull the steering wheel to put in a new ignition key? If so how do you change nowadays with an Airbag in the center of the steering wheel, or is this one of those jobs I MUST take to a garage to get fixed? As I said - this is only "by the way" - it is too late and dark here now and I'm not going outside anymore tonight unless I absolutely have to! Again, Thank You for your assistance and Very PROMPT response!!!!
    Bruce.

good,I am glade, does the column split?kind of rectangle shape?if so steering wheel does not have to come off,it sounds more like the ignition switch, not the lock and key cylinder,You can fix this tomorrow,if it is a split column, remove the screws and the column will split apart, check the ignition switch. It is most likely the problem.

I have 98 grand prix ignition is stuck in start had to pull fuel pump fuse but cant shut car off lights are still on

Suggest disconecting the battery. Then you can work on the problem. it is not clear if the issue is the key stuck in the start position in the iginition switch or if the starter motor is stuck (running) after the car starts. If it the starter motor is running... Time for a new starter. If it is the ignition switch, try
pushing the key in and turning back off. Still stuck? Try pulling pn the key and turning off. Either way, if it is the key, yime for a new ignition switch.

2000 Hyundai Excel ignition lock problem

What most people refer to as the "Ignition switch" is really the "cylinder lock", that when turned with the key, operates the actual "ignition switch".
The switch causing your problem is inside the steering column, and the column needs to be at least partly disassembled to access it.

Replace ignition cylinder

The key has to be in the switch, battery unhooked, turn key to start position, insert probe into small hole above cylinder to trip the wedge, and pull out.

1995 Ford Thunderbird - Engine won't turn off

Pull the 60amp fuse in the fuse box near the battery. You'll find it. That will shut off the motor. Remove the neg ground on the battery to shut off the rest of the car and save the battery,
It sounds like the ignition lock actuator. It goes from the ignition key switch to the Yellowish ignition switch box, under the dash on the column. It pushes the ignition switch to start and pulls it back to stop and lock. If you remove the 2 hex screws on the yellowish ignition switch and let it hang down, you will see a rod sticking out of the top. It's a slider. Push the slider toward the engine and it starts. Toward the drivers seat, and it shuts off the car. Check this out.

Cadillac cts won't turn off. Key turns but car

your ignition switch needs replaced, or the lock cylinder that holds the key if it just turns freely. it will need to be taken somewhere, it's not that easy of a job. hurry before you run out of gas!! how are you shutting it off? if you can find it, you could pull the fuel pump relay, but the lites are probably on also and will drain the battery

I have a 94 ford aerostar the starter hung up and the the motor just shut off. now we have put on a new stater and the van will not do nothing????

Probably melted a fusible link for the ignition circuit or fried a relay. Check all your fuses, especially the high amp ones. Do you have power to the starter when the key is in the "start" position? If not, check the fuses and cables. You sure the battery is not dead? Do the lights come one?

Have a 1999 mercury sable that key wouldn't turn off ignition so had to pull fuel pump fuse..Fixed ignition switch and now when you turn on key lights on dash and theft lights come on but won't turn...

you may have to go to a lock smith because one of the tumblers on the key switch has dropped and it could have just been a bad switch I had a similar problem on an old aerostar and I ended up replacing the whole steer column and took it to a lock smith before I installed it so the keys matched
