Power steering pump going bad in my 2004 pontiac grand prix, how long can i drive it like that

Difficult to say.
Once the bearing fails in the pump, you will either loose all of the fluid or the bearing will freeze and you will damage the serpentine belt that drives the water pump and engine accessories. Plus have zero power assist for the steering.
Could happen at any time.

I have a 97 grand prix and the power steering is messed up it makes a grinding sound and today my daughter was driving it and there was smoke coming oiut from under the manifold and it smelled like rubber...

Sounds to me like the bearings are worn out on the power steering pump and thats what you are hearing. Due to the fact all the other pulley are trying to spin at their normal rate and the bearings on the power steering pump are grinding, the Serpentine Belt is probably smoking too. Change the power steering pump (now) and inspect the Serpentine Belt real real good before you put it back on as it may very well need replaced now too.

Power steering not working tried adding power steering fluid didn't work.

The Pontiac power steering pump run off a shaft driven and not belt driven. This means that when the steering system is stressed instead of the belt slipping it puts a lot of stress on that shaft and could cause that to break. If nothing seems to effect the power steering I would have to guess that this is what happened and the power steering pump will have to be replaced.

No power steering

You need to put the car up on axle stands or ramps. Look for a lose or missing power steering belt, fluid leaks from hoses and fittings. You should check the fluid level first since you can do that from under the hood. Look up online repair guides to see if you want to try it yourself or take it to a garage. You might be able to fix leaking fittings by simply tightening them. So it's worth a try if you have ramps or axle stands.

Flush the power steering?

hi never heard of flushing a power steering rack before unless you have a problem leave it alone if it puts your mind at rest or have a problem with it it wouldn,t do any harm if the fluid looks the right colour and no signs of metal filings i would leave it if you want to spend your money on oil changes there are more important ones that get overlooked that should be changed [brake fluid, gearbox oil,] yates210456

How to remove power steering pump on a 1995 pontiac Grand am

MONKEY ARMS. if you have the tools and space take the sub frame loose under the car and lower the power train a little if needed to get easier access to the pump. if not just take the surpentine belt tensioner loose and remove the belt then take the frnt and rear fluid lines off drain and recover fluid and take the mount bolts off the top and bottom abd drop it out through the bottom of the engine bay.
