Question about Chevrolet Suburban 1500

Grinding niose towards rear of suburban when i coast. Does it every time coasting down hill or slowing to stop or turn. Echos through drive shaft at rear end.

    Pulled rear end totaly apart. Checked all bearings and races, smooth as glass. Replaced axle seals and pinion seal while apart. Gear oil looks fine. Running amsoil with posi additive. 268,000 miles on suburban with original rear and t-case. Just finished dropping t-case and going through it. Amsoil fluid like new no wear on anything except rear tail housing bushing which has a little pitting in the bushing on the top side. No play in the tail housing bearing or the drive shaft. Also pulled tranny pan which was clean as a whistle. Not even the gray residue on the bottom of the pan.

    Replaced the brakes when check out the rear bearings. Noise still their.

GM rears are known for this noise it is usually caused by a pinion bearing that is coming apart or what they call bernelling ( I am not sure I spelled that correctly) it is little pits in the cones in the bearing it comes from lack of lubrication or the pinion seal leaking,you could pull the rear cover and drain the fluid into a dark pan and look for debris or alot of silver color.

Sounds like the brakes are bad metal on metal. How to find out. Jack up the wheel on the side the noise is coming from spin the wheel by hand,& have someone push the brake pedal by hand if it makes a grinding sound its brakes
change pads or shoes & have drums-roters turned &trued

Rear differential fluid is prolly low.park on level ground, clean around the fill/check plug, take it out and make sure fluid is at bottom of hole

Any possibility you replaced the wrong part because you are on the right track- - perhaps issue was on other side.. Maybe you can go up some hill and coast down in neutral to see if the noise is coming from a transmission component. If noise absent while you coast that is a clue.

Why does it makes a growling noise?


noises are from chipped teeth, bad bearings , misaligned gears or incorrect meshing of gears . If the noise is on drive under load in 4th gear it will be a pinion bearing If the noise is in overdrive ,(coasting down hill or to ma stop , it will be pinion bearings (diff). If it is in 1st gear it will be input shaft bearing in gear box . If it is in overdrive it will be out put shaft or rear lay shaft bearing Gear box.

diff noises are a harmonic whine on drive (Acceleration or drive speed )or a growl on overdrive ( slowing down or coasting)
if you have a drive shaft to the rear diff it is possible that the rear shaft has not been assembled correctly and the out of phase of the joints will give indications that you describe
Take it to a drive shaft specialist shop for a diagnosis

I think I understand the question. These transmissions are known for the 4th speed shaft shearing off the splines. 4th being overdrive. This won't let it shift into overdrive and also no engine breaking when you are coasting. In other words, when you are coasting your engine rpms will drop down to idle speed. So when in 3rd or drive manual, you do have engine breaking and the rpms fall slowly. The transmission is gonna have to come out to be repaired. I hope this helps.

My 1997 ford explorer has a grinding noise while coasting. if i accelerate when i hear it grind it stops immeadiatly. then it some times makes the same noise while shifting into reverse. but it otherwise...


i recommend that you check your brakes 1st try to determine whether the grind you hear is from front or rear or maybe under the center of your vehicle. you may have a bad universal joint also, does it pop or crack at all when you shift out of park on a hill? or when you turn ono way or another on a hill? if none of these i suggest you consult your mechanic for further evaluation. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

if it is the pinion bearing located near the drive shaft it could cause slack and thump the drive shaft. with the truck jacked up the driveshaft would be sloppy near the rear up and down.

Thumping noise


2 things I would inspect, your motor mounts, and CV joints. If worn, one or both could cause what your experiencing. See if you can figure out where grinding is coming from, right or left side & check drive shaft CV joint on that side especially. Look close at both boots on them for rips or holes, where dirt has been entering.
P.S. a sloppy/worn CV joint can end up causing irregular wear on transmission as well, so don't let it go too long, if at all.
