its behind the starter. pull the starter, 3 bolts 10 mm 12 point wrench, and one bolt on crank sensor,(unplug) you may have to move the dipstick, alittle to pull it straight out, , Also disconnect the batteries, the RED wire on starter will arch, if you ground it!! jc

Crankshaft position sensor pigtail

If this dodge is fitted with the Cummins engine it will be at the rear of the engine, you will find a hall sensor there that is your crankshaft position sensor. Cummins upgraded an existing engine and could only fit the toothed gear at the rear of the engine to make it practical on the new common rail fuel injection systems.

Crankshaft position sensor 1999 dodge diesel

The easiest way to remove these crankshaft sensors is to pull the transmission out. They are in a very poor location and anyone with a moderate size hand has trouble pulling these out without pulling the transmission out. The vehicle will not run if this sensor is out, and i recommend replacing it even if it wasn't bad if you ever have to work on your transmission or ever have transmission work done. Knowing you have a Dodge, presuming it's an automatic, you will, and i repeat, will have to get transmission work done.
